Why can't I pause the full screen teleprompter with the space bar?

On the HELP MENU for my Adobe Visual Communicator 3 program, I am structed to use the SPACE BAR to pause and continue scrolling the TELEPROMPTER SCREEN.   The same instructions appear on the corrrelating webpage at:  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/VisualCommunicator/3.0/help.html?content=0 8_Teleprompter_5.html

 

It doesn't work on my HP 9000 series laptop computer.   Anyone know why?  (Adobe support can't help because their staff doesn't speak English.)

    Try holding the ctrl key down and then the space bar. Don't know why that's necessary, but that's what we do...

    I got this response long ago.  It worked.  Because I use FULL SCREEN telepropter and sit away from the keyboard, I keep on-screen keyboard up and use a Logitech mouse to hit the space bar.  I keep a small, heavy object on the control key, while reading the scrolling script.
