Placed PDF missing text after re-exporting to PDF

I'm using OSX 10.6 with InDesign CS3 504.

 

When I place PDFs into an InDesign file, and then PDF that InDesign file, some of the PDFs are missing text.  All text boxes have been made from the same original text box, just modified for content, and shape very slightly.

 

The text that is missing is most often white, where it's being used over the top of black frames.  There is one instance of black text over a white frame missing.

 

I've tried exporting to .inx, and then re-pdfing.  I've also tried copying text boxes that are 'working' and changing the content, but still the same text boxes are missing their text.

    Is the text part of the placed PDF, or added in ID?

     

    Does it show in Preview mode?

    The text is part of the PDF placed into the 2nd InDesign file.  It displays fine in Preview mode.

     

    I've also tried Placing as INDD pages, but get the same problem on the 2nd PDF export.

    Did you make the original PDFs in ID, or did they come from somewhere else?

     

    Back in CS (version 3), there was an issue with nesting PDFs and subset fonts. If more than one subset of the same font was used in differnt nested PDFs, ID would only include the first subset in the final output, and there would be dropouts, but this sounds different as it's unlikley that an entire text block would be using only glyphs not contained in the first subset, plus this was supposed to have been fixed and I haven't seen it reported in years. The workaround was to not subset the fonts.

    Originals made in IND CS3.  How do I not subset the fonts?

    I had a go at not subsetting, by reducing the % to 0%.  Didn't make any difference.

     

    I copied one of the offending text items and put it into a brand new document.  I PDFd that in the same way, placed the PDF into a new INDD, and PDFd that in the same way.  The text item showed up just fine.

     

    The problem seems to be in that document, with a combination of objects, or something.

    Try exporting to .inx and open that, then save as a new .indd.

    i already tried exporting to .inx about 3 hours ago.  unfortunately i'm very pressed for time with a meeting in about 1 hour, so i've recreated the problem text boxes.  luckily there were only about 10 of them and it only took 10 mins.

     

    before that i tried to isolate the problem element, but couldn't find one.  every time i removed something, i still got the problem.  the only time i didn't get the problem was when i had just the text boxes on their own, with none of the other essential page elements.

    aah, and guess what?  the problem has returned.  back to square 1.  can't believe it.

     

    i had it fixed and now it's not working again.  same boxes that i just remade and were working, are now not working.  sheesh.
