Does Flash Update Disable Your Captivate Presentations?

Nov 9, 2010 5:35 AM

A Flash player update came out a few days ago, I believe Nov. 4. Apparently updating the Flash Player to the latest version makes it impossible to view some, but not all, of my Captivate content on the web. I am certain the Flash Player update is responsible -- I was able to fix the problem on one of my machines by rolling back the update and installing the previous version of Flash.

My first guess was that some of the earlier projects were originated in Captivate 4 and converted to 5, while later ones were originated in 5. To be honest, I'm not sure about that; I could be mistaken but I think some originated in 5 are affected.

I have also found that I can fix the old ones by (1) starting with a "new" template (2) copying slides from old presentations to new (3) saving the new file (4) republishing, etc.

However, this is tedious, and it seems to me that the new Flash player should not cause this problem.

I too have just had the same problem. I installed the update to Flash 10 that came out a few days ago, and my published Cap 5 presentations won't play (locally and on our LMS). (using IE7, WinXP, SP3). The space just shows black; yet I did not get a security warning or any indication of what the problem was. I published a Captivate presentation right before the update and it played fine, but then this one I created and published after the update had this problem. In desperation I finally uninstalled Flash 10 and installed Flash 9 again (from the "archived" versions on Adobe site), and now all is good again and presentation plays.

I'd sure like some idea what to do for the future too, though, because I'll eventually have to upgrade to Flash Player 10. Does it work better on Windows 7 maybe?

    thanks

    alex

No, it does not work any better on Windows 7.  It appears to be the very latest update though.  If you go back to the previous version of 10.1, it should work...it did for me.  The version I now have is 10.1.82.76.  The one that is a problem is: 10.1.102.64.

    Hello Henry,

Do you have any text animations in your project? If so, can you remove them and check whether this solves the issue?

    Thanks,

    Vish

I have same problem - because chrome has a built in player, to start only chrome was disabling presentations - however I stupidly downloaded Flash 10.1 for FF and IE and now neither of them show the presentations.

This is graveyard time for Captivate if they cannot sort it.

Strangely one of my modules DOES still play (from same course). I am removing uncommon bits one by one and will let you know if I have any success.

    NEW INFO

OK, if I remove all text entry boxes linked to result pages then the modules play... will try and narrow down to one slide now....

    NEW INFO

If I remove only the pages that call a variable ($$variable1$$) then it works...

    Thanks, Dave.

I also found that the build number 10.1.102.64 is the problem, not the earlier one of 10.1.82.76. Which means that in theory, I could upgrade back to the "good" 10 version build from 9.

Since Henry C. (on this forum) got word that Adobe is looking into this, I have confidence that they'll figure this one out soon.

    Hi All

After rooting around... it is text animations and/or roll over captions that generate the problem. Remove them and modules play fine.

    I'm also seeing this issue.

As far as I can make out it is Text Animation that is causing the issue. Remove this and it plays fine.

    Thanks,

    Donal

The problem has been officially acknowledged by Adobe in the thread linked to below. Fingers crossed that the solution lies with Flash Player and not a new release of Captivate. I don't fancy having to republish all my movies!

Hi Donal - yes to text animation; but I had some pages with text animation and roll over caption, and the module would not play until the roll over caption had been removed as well. CP5.

    Cheers Nick

This issue has been fixed and steps to apply the fix is outlined in the blog post http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/11/solution-for-cp5-content-not- working-with-the-latest-flash-player-version.html

Please note that, after installing the fix you need to re-publish your captivate projects having text animations. Please let us know the results.

    Thanks,
    Vish

    Hi Vish,

Thanks for the quick turnaround on this.

I have applied the fix and can confirm that it works. I have tested in both Chrome and IE9.

In saying all that, I am a little concerned at the prospect that this might be it and that all previous movies will have to be republished.

What we really need here is a new Flash Player that doesn't require this fix to be implemented.

Can you let us know, either way, if this will be the case?

    Thanks,

    Donal
