PP CS5 Crashing constantly

Nov 11, 2010 6:05 PM

I'm new to adobe and this new mac pro.  every time i fire up PP CS5 it crashes my 2010 mac pro hard. have to power on reset.   I also have PP CS5 licensed on a 2010 mbp, and it works fine. I'm sure you need more than this but here's what i've gathered.  This is the first night trying the new software and machine so i don't have any older releases of PP to test on or other machines other than the 2010 mbp (10.6.4)

The sequence is that I simply start PP5, drag an AVI movie to the source frame.  then I drag it into the sequence frame directly below.  the avi plays but if i try to resize windows, or other basic navigation functions, it abends.  if i don't touch anything, just let the movie play, it plays fine.  but 'using' the product causes it to crash, 100%.

mac pro 2010  10.6.4  abends running 32 and 64 bit

(i clicked on apple software update, it says the software is up to date, except for the 10.6.5 update released today).

PP CS5  v 502  (075 mc 218798)

I don't have any peripherals other than a logitech mouse and the apple 27" cinema display.  i removed the logitech mouse and swapped it out for the magic mouse, same result.

i don't know what this means...

any idea how to stop the hard system crash?

    Hi,

I have an ATI Radeon HD 5770 in the 2010 Mac Pro I'm using right now... Everything was find until today. PPro does not crash but refuse to play the timeline (or the source window). Especially when I'm running AE at the same time. But even when running only PPro, I still have bad performances: slow to start to play, and just stop to play after a moment. When it's happening, then, there is nothing to do but restart the computer, because PPro is not going to play again.

So what's the difference between yesterday and today?

Yesterday, before to shut down the machine, I installed all the Apple update package. I'm now running 10.6.5...

So... I know it does not help you, but at least you'll feel less alone.

    k0vt73,

Try booting the Mac OS kernel in 32-bit mode. I have seen one report of this making a difference, and I'm curious to know if it helps in your case.

I'm using the new iMac 27" with the ATI Radeon HD 5750, one month old. Recently,  I would 100% crash hard lock up or even computer instantly shutting off the moment I tried to resize my sequence preview window while I was playing the timeline. This happened in new and old project files of various project settings and using both a single monitor (iMac) or dual monitor setups. I trashed my prefs, uninstalled PP CS5, nothing fixed it. This was happening with OSX 10.6.4, updated to 10.6.5, didn't fix it. Then I changed my preview from "fit" (which is what I always have it set to) to 20%. For some odd reason, now it's totally fine when runing the timeline and resizing. Changed it to other percentage options, no problem. Went back to "fit" and no issues now. STRANGE. But there is something definitely funky going on with this ATI card because when I do have the window set to "fit" even if I have no clips in the timeline, when I go to resize the preview window I get white blocks of corruption in the black movie window on the borders. I'm not a programmer but I believe this is a redraw issue?

I have the same issue with my mac pro 5,1. I am running 10.6.5 with a ATI Radeon HD 5870 running to 1 monitor only. If I ever resize the canvas, timeline, etc windows while the video is paused or stopped everything works fine. If I try to resize while the video is playing back I get a complete system lock up / kernel panic within a few seconds, and I have to physically restart the mac pro with the power button. This is 100% repeatable and it happens every single time I have tested it. This is a pretty massive software bug, as only premiere literally hard locks my system. All other adobe products run just fine as well as other editing programs. I really hope adobe is nearing a fix for this issue asap.

    > Is this correct or do I have a way of entering a defect for free on a newly purchased suite?

Rather than speculating on the forum, I recommend that you contact Technical Support:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/

They'll be able to tell you definitively whether you're eligible for support. Folks on this forum are less likely to be able to do that.

I also recommend that you file a bug report if you're having trouble. That is the best way to let the Premiere Pro team know the details of the problems that you're encountering, and it is the best way to increase the chances of problems being fixed.

I am also having some crashing issue running PPro CS5 on our new Mac Pro 2010 model. But first, those .avi files - I didn't think you could edit .avi files on a Mac. Has that changed or maybe just avi type 2 or something? We have some dslr cameras that output .avi I have always had to transcode them before editing on the mac.

The crash I get is really annoying because it does not kick of a crash reporter from Adobe or Apple. Everything just freezes except the audio which will keep playing until the end of the timeline is reached. Keyboard, mouse, everything else is frozen even after a 30 minute wait and see period. Hard reboot required each time. This has happen with 2 different HDV projects now (footage captured in ppro).

I have the same exact thing going on, I have a ATI 5770 in my MP 1,1 despite what Apple has said, the 5770 works great on first gen MacPro's. However, every time I playback a video in the preview or main monitor, if I try and re-size any of the work space it kernel panics and the mac freezes. I don't have any troubles with Final Cut, its only Premiere Pro.   I did however install my old ATI x1900 card into my MacPro and the issue goes away. I can resize any place of the workspace and it dose not crash  I also did a Clean install of OSX 10.6 and installed all the updates. and then installed PP CS5 and installed all if its updates before creating a new project, and yet it still crashes with the 5770 and not the old x1900
