Print Selection Failed no matter what I do!

I have In Design CS4 installed on my Vista 64-bit for the past year. And recently I have been getting print selection failed, restoring previous selection (which defaults to Postscript) no matter what I do. Sometimes if I restart my pc it will work but then happens again. Printing works on other suite programs so I know its not my printer and it used to work fine for the past year!

 

I have tried to trash my preferences and all, but didn't help any. Can someone help me with this? This has really become a major pain for such an expensive program!

    That error, as far as I know, means that ID is not seeing the printer. The first thing I would try is reinstalling the printer in Windows.

    Unfortunately reinstalling printer drivers did not work, as I suspected, because other programs in the Creative Suite were able to detect the printers fine. I am fresh out of ideas and very frustrated as the printer detection is failing at random points and most often when I have an important project that needs to print!

     

    This is not acceptable for such an expensive program

     

    Please, any help/guidance would be much appreciated!

    Is this a local printer, or network? It's really unlikely the problem is inside ID.

    The printer is connected directly to the computer so it's local. Any other possible troubleshooting methods?

    Try replacing the printer cable. Use the shortest cable that will work.

    This is still unresolved and I am very frustrated. It is NOT the printer cable, I have two printers connected to my computer and InDesign is not recognizing EITHER of them, it just keeps saying Printer Selection Failed and will not let me select anything other than the default/postscript. Every now and then if I restart the computer, it will detect the printers, but this is RANDOM!

     

    I have plugged and unplugged cables and it is still the same thing. No other programs I have run give me any problems when I try to print (including the other CS4 components. Only Indesign is doing this). What is going on??

    I'm sorry to hear you're still having trouble. Since the most obvious casues seem to be eliminated at this point you might want to try reinstalling InDesign.

     

    Try running a "Repair" from the installation media (run the installer) before resorting to completely uninstalling and reinstalling. Be sure you back up your important customizations and presets first (you can find soome advice in the thread on how to Replace Your Preferences). If you decide to do a full reinstall, you may aslo want to run the CS5 cleanup tool: Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool

    Hi Peter,

    It used to be that restarting my computer would bring back the printer settings, but now it just flat out DOES NOT WORK. This is so frustrating. I tried repair, and then uninstalling and reinstalling Indesign and it STILL does not work! 

    At this point I am almost ready to just buy an Upgrade to CS5 hoping that the problem would go away but I shouldn't have to do this!

     

    Can I choose to run the cleanup tool just on Indesign or will it be wiping out the entire suite? That's just painful as I have lots of presets and plugins on my order adobe suite programs

    I beleive the clean-up tool is a "scorched-earth" solution -- nothing selective about it except the version -- but thankfully I've never had to run it to solve a problem here.

     

    Aside from that, If you are thinking about upgrading at all in the future, you should do it now.
