Hello there,
So, whenever i've been in Bridge for a little while and want to do a full preview mode by hitting the spacebar I get the dark grey screen and after awhile "the spinning beach ball of death" appears. This continues until I have to force quit Bridge. When I restart bridge and try to do a new preview right away the same problem occurs imeditly.
I've tried to delete all the preffs both manually and automatically by holding down the option key during start up, but nothing helps. I've also installed the latest updates.
I'm on a pretty new Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel i5 bought this summer with a SSD harddrive and 4gb of RAM if that is of interest.
Am I way off if I think it could have to do with the graphics card?
Well I'm thankful if anybody has solution for this.
Best,
Per

Don't think your specs won't allow you to view full screen preview. What do
you mean with deleting prefs for Bridge manual? Did you trash the plist file
from the user library or an other file.
In Bridge prefs under the advanced tab you have the option to choose
'generate monitor sized previews' have you selected those already?
What setting do you generally have for Bridge preview, always high Quality
or on demand or embedded previews?
What files are you looking at, especially how large are they. Have you
checked also those files do not exceed the maximum size you have set in the
Bridge preferences for preview (by default it is set to 1 GB max).
And last but not least, what version of Bridge are you using, latest updates
can be for any version ![]()
Hey Omke, thanks for the response and sorry for not replying fast. I thought i might have have had some corrupt files, wich wasn't the case.
When I say iv'e deleted all the specs manually I just mean that i've done pretty much this.
The wierd thing is that i've never had the "generate monitor sized previews" checked, and never had any issues with it. I turned it on now.
I don't really understand this part you wrote.
"What setting do you generally have for Bridge preview, always high Quality

When it comes to size it can be any size, either a large psd. file or a tiny .jpg. And i have my max set to 1000mb.
I'm on CS5 and i've checked and double checked that i've downloaded the right updates
.
Thanks again for the response and help in this rather frustrating matter.
Hope you have a good weekend
I have the exact same problem.
Using CS5, had not set "generate monitor sized previews" -- been using bridge on other Mac's for years without ever having to set anything.
Let us know what your recommendations are for settings, and any help you can give.

"What setting do you generally have for Bridge preview, always high Quality

In Bridge Path Bar top right there are two small checker board icons. The
left one is just a shortcut for prefer embedded previews that only let you
cache the thumbs. A quick way to view the content of a non cached folder and
have the option to glance through thumbnails without having the need to wait
for all the previews to be build.
The right one gives you 3 options, first prefer embedded (same as left icon
and in fact is double but there are still more strange things in Bridge
regarding to workflow I'm afraid...)
Second is High Quality on Demand meaning the HQ preview builds when you
select the file. Somewhat useful but time costly when having to click on
several files and every time have to wait for the building of the preview.
Third is Always HQ. This one I prefer to have set as default. It means that
you have to wait longer for all the previews to being build but this is only
once and after this you can browse freely through all the files.
Having set to also build monitor sized previews in the prefs means you also
have to wait a little longer once when the folder builds cache but this is
in the same go after file ingestion and after this you can use the space bar
almost without delay to see a full screen preview. (And I'm on a 30"" Apple
Cinema display using mostly files from a EOS 1Ds3, big files, big screen ![]()
)
When it comes to size it can be any size, either a large psd. file or a tiny
.jpg. And i have my max set to 1000mb.
With this setting files above 1000 MB don't build previews but that should
not cause trouble when hitting spacebar, it only shows the small thumb on a
full screen with gray background and surely should not let Bridge crash.
Try also system maintenance with check and repair permissions.
And if the problem still persist create a new user for testing, log in under
this new account and try if the problem is still there, just to rule out
your current user account as the culprit.
Hey again Omke,
I'm sorry to say that I've tried all your tips and tricks with out any luck.
Don't really know what else there is to do.
But if anyone figures out how to resolve the issue, please let me and the rest of the folks with the same issue know what were doing wrong.
Best regards,
Per
sorry to hear that Per,
Just have re read the posts but could not find if you already tried the obvious first thing for Bridge, restart it with option key pressed and choose refresh preferences.
Have you also done this when having deleted cache and plist?
And a new user also did not work for you??
Also thought about the use of an SSD but Spore and Icracker don't seem to have such a Disk. Wonder if they have tried all the same solutions and also are still in trouble.
Could you all confirm this?
And Per,
do I understand that sometimes you are able to view full previews but after a while not, then after restart Bridge previews won't work at all or can't you use the full screen preview never?
And have you tried the menu command for full screen with the mouse instead of space bar? Menu View/full screen
Should be enough.
Depending on the 256 MB Graphic card for the i5 (which is required as
minimum) or the i7 that has 512 MB on the Graphic card... ![]()
And also the amount of free space left on your HD. 10 percent or less free
space is almost bound to get you in trouble.
Anyway, the MacBook Pro you own should be working without the setting to use
software rendering. So if this solves your problem it might be OK for you
but it seems to me that there is also something else not working correctly.
In my opinion all of the above is related to an undrpowered graphic card. Has little or nothing to do with ram.
If you are using Intel onboard graphics as in post #3 it will probably not work well. They do some tasks very well, but for Photoshop they just do not keep up with the latest.
ATI and NiVida are the leaders for graphics cards. Don't need a top of the line model, just a midrange, $50-100 is fine.
Changing the video card in a macbook pro isnt really an option is it - especially not for $50-$100
You are right, not an easy option. The minimum requirement for CS5 is 256 MB VRAM on your graphic card. But for better performance you need at least 500 MB.
But to me it still seems a cache related problem.
Also make sure you have the preferences set to 'generate monitor sized previews' in the advanced tab. Using software rendering only helps if your minimum requirements for the graphic card are not good enough.
If they are from the same folder try and purge the cache for folder using the menu tools/cache/purge cache for folder.
And keep in mind that the folder needs to finish its caching first to before showing all proper results.
