CS5: "Exit Code: 7" ad nauseam (XP SP3)

Oct 19, 2010 1:06 PM

Hi,

I spent quite some time reading all the available stuff related to the annoying Exit Code 7 installation bug.

However, whatever I tried (and I did try a lot) was of no avail.

I'll recap what I experienced:

First of all, a couple of weeks ago, I got my hands on a new Toshiba notebook with a freshly installed W7 Pro x64.

Except for the current Flash player and AIR no Adobe software had been installed. I did an trial installation of Photoshop CS5 which worked perfectly.

No problems whatsoever, neither afterwards.

Now, I wanted to install 3 apps of the Master Collection on an older notebook with Windows XP SP3.

This notebook meets the minimal system requirements (processor, RAM, HD space...). Currently, merely the latest Flash player is installed, no other Adobe programs. The internal XP Firewall is active, but no other measures are taken, i.e. no Antivirus program. I read about issues concerning Font Management tools: none either.

There is one difference between the W7 x64 installation and the above mentioned XP installation:

The Windows directory which defaults to "C:\WINDOWS" is "C:\XP" for the XP installation. (Does this have an impact on the CS5 installation routine?)

I carried out several tests now (as a user with administrative rights):

  • Launching 1 (Photoshop) to 3 (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop) programs as trial versions, aborts with Exit Code: 7 - Unable to complete Silent workflow
  • Launching the Dreamweaver CS5 Trial Version (german), aborts with Exit Code: 7 - Unable to complete Silent workflow

       The first error entry line, which is repeated twice, reads: ERROR: Unable to locate folder for token UserDocuments

  • Manually executed and installed the .msi files within the Microsoft_* directories beforehand, then starting the installation: same problem

I meticulously cleaned the XP notebook (Add/Remove programs, then Common Files, then Adobe Products Cleaner, and CCleaner) prior to each new attempt but no way. It doesn't matter which user (built-in Administrator or not) is logged in.

This is the worst installation mess I've experienced for years! None of the tips in the other thread seem to help.

I'm at my wits' end now. Hasn't anyone figure out the cause of the problem yet?

Greetings,

Karl

    @execine2:
    Seems specifically because of the following two fonts your installation is failing -

    ERROR: 39 Failed to add Font 'C:\Windows\Fonts\AdobeSongStd-Light.otf'. Error: 2
    ERROR: 27 Failed to add Font 'C:\Windows\Fonts\AdobeFangsongStd-Regular.otf'. Error: 2

    Follow instructions on the following kb article to delete these fonts and then run the installer -

    @karlran:
    Probably your user documents folder is mapped to some network drive. Try changing it back to Window's default.

    I am having a similar issue with CS5.  I have tried to install many times, removing applications and making sure firewall or virus scanner wasn't on.

    Funny thing is the first time I went to install it, only InDesign wouldn't install.

    Now 4 applications won't install including InDesign and PhotoShop.

    I am at my wits end with this and the Adobe Knowledge base is COMPLETELY USELESS!  I do searches for the error codes and I get NO RESULTS.  What is the point of a knowdgebase if you aren't going to have hits for common things that popup in your User Interface.

    I am about to go "Office Space" on these discs if I can't get this installed.

    My logs seem to point out that the installation is tryinig to install x64 versions.  I am on a 32-bit machine.

    I right clicked my documents and it's mapped to the standard area, so that quick fix won't work for me.

    In my opinion this install application is far too volitile to be in retail release.  I have worked with BETAs that had better installation programs with much better support for errors.  I have wasted 2 days on this!!!!
