    Ok, what does Chris know?

    So let's move on…

Crash on quit some alert user tried this while they were manually checking permissions and checked the permissions on the applications setting folder in the users preferences and noticed it was not read/write for all listed users, so they manually changed it and it did not crash on quit, generaally this is the problem with crash on quit.

This would also make sense if the file or folder that the settings mentioned are store on or in where also not set for every listed user to have read/write permission and you would of course lose those settings since they were never written.

Now I also noticed that on occasion, and I do not know why, that you have what appears to be a full list of users, that you have to add one more user the Administrator and make sure, as crazy as this sounds, that the administrator has read/write permissions as well.

Now I assume this happens when you install third party application or maybe even updates because the systems security tries to lock the installer out of entering the preferences to make changes it thinks are unauthorized so instead of letting an installer in to the preferences it locks it out by changing the permissions, right or wrong.

Now that is an assumption by myself who knows squat about how installers are designed and how security or any other code works, it is just a thought Ihad right or wrong.

Nw that is something the Chris does know about and so I guess I answered my opening question above!

The crash on quit is generally related to permissions as fa as I know and I have fixed it for Illustrator it has not happened to me with Photoshop for a long, long time.

There was a crash on quit in 12.0.0 due to permissions (in a component supplied by another group), but that was fixed in 12.0.1.

Beyond that, we haven't had any crashes due to permissions that we know of.

Sorry to hear that but I got the same problem (but not as often as yours).  What pisses me off is it takes the files I saved with it when it crashes (so that work that I saved but still open will no longer recover).  I don't know what's wrong with it but I'm considering upgrading to CS5.5 soon if this keeps happening.  The best of luck to you!

If you've installed all the updates (to 12.0.4) and it's still crashing often, chances are you're looking at a third party plugin bug or an OS bug.

Local files or saved acrosss a network?
