Spam report thread [5]

Apr 12, 2011 11:32 AM

May I take the liberty to open a new Spam Report thread? The previous one, numbered [4], has been archived for hours with no explanation at all and, to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been replaced so far.

Considering that most of the removed features of these forums have been "temporarily disabled for security reasons", I think that this thread is esential. Of course, people in charge of the forums can link it as appropriate, or remove it if they fell like it.

What do you mean by "archived?"

OK. Not sure why that appears as archived. Off to investigate.

Archiving is an "automated" process that happens to threads that have not had any activity in a while. That thread had messages posted yesterday. Hence my initial confusion about it being archived. I'm not aware of a way for someone to manually archive a thread.

    Keeps life interesting!

I gather we're supposed to report spam here rather than using the Report Abuse link?

This: Re: What do pink-highlighted squares mean? is spam.

It is a matter of personal preference for both the reporter and the

moderator / admin. I pretty much ignore what is reported here and only

respond to what is in the moderation queue.

Hi Claudio  Sorry, that is what I meant to do. I had the username and then went back to check a thread and didn't realize I posted the thread instead! I even read John's post about that, good grief:-) I went from this person's profile and then back to checking the various threads and then posted the thread!!

    Thanks for reminding me:-)

Very last item in this thread is spam.

And I, on the other hand, check in here in case something wasn't in the Abuse Queue. This thread works better/faster for me. So, either way it should get covered.

Hi Phillip, I didn't think I indicated that the "thread" was Spam, only indicated "where" this Spam was posted. Then I posted the user name. Hard to tell where the person decides to post next.

Isn't that the way to report this?

I don't know of any other way, so if that wasn't correct please let me know.

    Thanks,

All I know is I get email notices of all topics I read.  and I got one from That thread and the very last fellow was promoting some type of forum not related to Acrobae or Adobe. I have also posted an abuse report , but I don't it marks the whole post as abuse or just the particular item being reported.

No you didn't do things wrong!

My heavens! I guess this explains why it occasionally takes a few hours for the de-spammers

to remove some of the spam that gets reported here. I should cut (at least some of) the sna

rky comments (at least about the spam removal; the software here on the other hand....

    )

Hi Phillip, I also receive the Spam Report posts from anyone that posts there as well as the "Horrible" and various other Forums and just check the Forums so I know what has been reported etc.

On the Flash Player Forum, there are times I use the Report abuse feature depending on the thread/message etc. For actual Spam, I use the Spam Report site.

My understanding is that the report abuse feature only pertains to that particular thread if there are no replies to use the report abuse feature on. If using the report abuse feature from a post itself, I am under the impression that it applies to that particular message/poster.

Claudio will let me know if I'm not correct:-)

I understand John's point and agree with it; the faster you can report Spam here, the better.

    Thanks,

    Dear Compadre:-)

    I agree with your Point#1 & #2. Entiendo tambien.

Point#3...That's true. However, since John has explained why it's easier and faster for him, then using the Spam Report thread is the better I think. The faster we can get the Spammers reported, the better.

I use the Report abuse on the FP Forum mainly on the message and users posting their websites/advertising etc.

    Muchas Gracias,

Hi Kami, I try not to fuss at the time it takes for the Spam to be removed as I'm sure they have more to do. I just wish there were a better way to remove it faster by those that find it.

All the Spam on the FP Forum is gone!!! Yeahhhhhh!! Thanks John!!

I don't know which Forum receives the most, but I think the FP Forum is in the top 3 at the very least:-)

The Flash Player forum consistently gets about 20 per day for the last 2

months. That is manageable because people report them. The real danger

is the forums like all the Flash Lite stuff, the deprecated LiveCycle

versions, 2 of the Connect forums, and all the MarketPlaces / Exchanges.

You see spammers posting a single message there and if it is still there

a week later they let loose. We have had 5 forums this year that got

more spam in a day than the Flash Player forum gets in 3 months. At one

point spam in one of the Acroat forums outpaced all other messages in

all other forums by a factor 3 for 4 days.

A pretty big contributing factor at the moment is the broken search. The

usual pharma spammers can be found with a simple single keyword which

still works. For some of the other stuff that is currently popular

amongst spammers you need to combine multiple keywords and as soon as

you do that the search breaks and returns zero hits.

Thanks Jochem, that's interesting and helpful to understand how the spammers can and do operate. Especially on those threads you mentioned. So suspect would be those newly registering and not starting a thread, but just in waiting for an opportune time to Spam all at once. A "gang" so to speak. There is no reason for anyone to Register and not start a thread unless they would be a prospective Spammer in my opinion. Same thing if they just registered and replied nonsense to a thread already established.

I don't understand the Technicalities of what is involved, but these newly registered and not starting a thread would be put in a holding cell. They would have 1 day to start a thread or would stay in the holding cell:-)

When you speak of the search feature, are you referring to the "Search Forums" feature at the top of a Forum? Or do you have a separate Spam Search function? I've never searched for Spammers so probably don't understand how that works. Do you need some new keywords? LOL Sorry, I know it's not funny. It's costly both in time for all concerned and money as well.

    Thanks,
