Archive to JPEG feature

Apr 13, 2011 7:21 AM

Yes, we all love non-destructive editing with dng's. However, there are times I don't really need to keep RAW files around anymore. (random pictures - dog, food, etc). I wish there was a way to archive DNG's to JPEG. Yes, we would lose all the edit histories but the space savings are worth it. My DNG files are 8-12 MB right now. I'd like to shrink some to JPEG's < 1 MB. Currently, the workflow I've found is this:

1.) Export to JPEG

2.) Delete original DNG's from drive.

3.) Import JPEG's

It's a pain in the butt. I wish there was just a button I could push that automatically converts _selected_ DNG's to JPEG, preserves keywords and metadata, and preserves the file structure.

Hopefully this won't diminish your FR, but one thing you may not be aware of:

    - Tick the 'Add to Catalog' box in the export dialog box - that takes care of step 3.

PS - Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Del or Mac equivalent will delete those DNGs instantly - no prompt, no undo (but in recycle/trash).

Exporting to jpeg and then re-adding to catalogue is what I do at the moment. While metadata seem to be fully preserved the image is not in any collection the former RAW file was in (of course, as it is a new image).

A "convert to jpeg" function should take care of this also.
