Optimizing performance ... ?

At the end of every Adobe Reader installation or update (on Windows) there is a phase that says

 

Status: Optimizing performance ...

 

 

Does anybody know what it is actually doing during that phase?  I cannot quite imagine what could be done to optimize the performance, except perhaps moving all components together?  If so, defragging my HD would actually undo that?

    It is actually defragging...

    Even if another defragging undo that (which I am not convinved), not too many people defrag their systems.
