Using a framing feature with Elements 7

Jul 8, 2011 10:17 PM

Hi, I am using Elements 7 and have tried using the frame feature for my photos. I

drag the selected frame to the large screen and, while it works, I would like to have a white

border inside the frame, just like a matte board. How does one do it?

I have PSEv.8. Probably it works the same way in PSEv.7.

    1. Open blank, new file (File>new>blank file) set H, W, and resolution (240-300 px/in for printing)
    2. Go to Content palette and select frame, apply, size appropriately
    3. Drag picture from project bin up into frame, resize to allow room for matte
    4. Set foreground chip to white
    5. Right click the layer with frame and picture and simplify the layer
    6. Access magic wand tool, and in tool's option bar be sure that contiguous is checked. Click on the area for the matte to select it - should see "marching ants"
    7. Go Edit>fill selection with foreground color
    8. Go to Select>deselect

Please post back with your progress.

Step 3 is likely to give different results in PSE 7. If it doesn't work, try a copy/paste instead.

    1. Resize the frame with the corner handles  by dragging while holding down the mouse button- see the red arrow. That way you enlarge the frame to fill the checkerboard area which denotes transparency. Then commit - see green arrow.
    2. The color chip is in the left corner of the work area. Set the foreground chip to white
    3. Right click on the layer with the frame to get a context menu and choose "simplify"
    4. The magic wand is a tool in the tool box . On the tool's option bar at the top there is a box. Check "contiguous"
    5. Barbara suggested that for step #3, instead of dragging the picture into the frame, copy/paste it. To do that open the picture file, go to Select>all, then Edit>copy - that puts it on the clipboard, open the frame in step #2 in my previous post, go to Edit>paste. You can position and resize with the move tool if necessary.

You need to have the layers palette open and be familiar with the concept of layers.
