lawrie13, you have the right idea but there are several Library folders on your system, and you're going to the wrong one. The files in question are in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources, which is the Library folder off the root of your hard drive. You can get there from Finder by pressing Cmd-Shift-G and typing in /Library (note the leading slash).

Background info: Typing ~/Library will take you to the Library folder in your home directory (the tilde is a Unix-y abbreviation for your home folder). There's also another Library folder in /System/Library which you should generally never mess with. They form a hierarchy of sorts -- only Apple gets to mess with /System/Library; anything in /Library affects all users, and things in ~/Library only apply to you. (In some cases there's a /Network/Library managed by your sysadmin as well.)

    Hi

I looked under the devices in the side bar menu  which is the name of the computer

this showed me the name of the hard drive

I clicked on the hard drive name and it opened

    Library.jpg

The list of folders included  "Library"   (At the disk level this folder is not hidden on my iMac)

This is different from the 'Library' at the User level which is hidden with Lion

At the disk level library are the folders in which are the files that Alsolve says delete

I got to the folder that DanRHollock mentioned, however there are lot of PPDs, but none Alsolve said to remove. Now what?

    Does it require a restart?

I successfully removed the PPDs and relaunched CS3 InDesign but the print function still crashed. Do I need to remove them from ALL the folders within contents at that level?

    Thanks for the assist.

Well, I'll be jiggered! That's what my Grandpa used to say. I deleted those Printer PPD folders and it works! And I'm running CS3 on Lion.

Now, if I could just launch Dreamweaver CS3 in Lion...

The general recommendation remains to reinstall the Adobe products.

    Have you tried that?

To ASolve: THANK  you so much for your help in getting Lion to print from InDesign  CS3.  I deleted those PPD folders and can print again! Now if you could only help get Flash to work w/o the frozen  Allow/Deny popping up in videos!

    Hello Alsolve

I removed the files you mentioned inside all of those folers and when I tried to print again in Adobe InDesign CS3, it didn't crash, but all of my printers disappeared and so I was not able to print.

I had to get some help from Apple Support to get the printers back, so I am hesitant to try this fix again, although I must say it is so inconvenient for me to have to make a pdf file to print so often and this is really slowing me down and I do have a deadline.

I do appreciate your support however, as a few on this forum have been helped by this fix. If there is anything you could tell me that might help with the printers disappeaing I would so appreciate it.

Thank you for your time and attention. So appreciated.

Take care and have a wonderful day.

    Joyous Regards, Veronica

probably you deleted all the printer PPD's present on your system, remember that you have to delete only Adobe PDF PPD present in the following folders.

    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/en.lproj,

    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_CN.lproj,

    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Ja.lproj,

    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/ko.lproj,

    OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_TW.lproj,

    OS means your primary Drive.

and to create  PDF's from InDesign, I suggest you use export as PDF instead of trying to print to a PDF printer.

I haven't upgraded to Lion yet for fear of it killing CS3 (which I need and sadly am in no position to upgrade to CS5 at the moment). However I've been having lots of problems since the OS update to 10.6.8. In particular indesign just will not export to PDF. I get the dialog for the PDF options, select what I want but when I click to export I get a "The application InDesign has unexpectedly quit." message. The way I got around this issue was to actually set up a new account on my computer and as if by magic InDesign works again perfectly, however I did not let it apply any updates to the CS3 package I'm running (design premium) like it had on my other account. Also on my old original account all the problems still exist. So perhaps it's something that was added in the updates, I'm not sure.

Is there any fix for this? Would the fix for the printing above solve this too? I'm reluctant to start deleting files as I'm on a deadline this week. But if anyone else has had this problem and found a solution I'd be pleased to hear it.

If I upgrade to Lion will CS3 work again if I apply the fix suggested here? Is there anything this won't fix. My main concern is for InDesign and Photoshop, I wouldn't be happy living without the others but I could cope.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

The problem you're discussing sounds like a new one, not one we've heard about before. It also has nothing to do with Lion. So please, open a new thread.

The good news is we know how to debug crashes (rather than mysterious failures). When you get the Adobe Crashreporter, click on Crash Data in the lower left corner. Upload the file to pastebin.com and post a link here (well, in a new thread). We'll look at it and tell you why ID is crashing. Please don't post the whole report in a thread on the forum here though -- it makes the forum unnavigable.

Quite frankly, if you are “in no position to upgrade to CS5 at the moment” (and actually, CS5 upgrades are no longer available from Adobe; you would need to upgrade to CS5.5), then you really are not in a position to upgrade your operating system. Simply stated, if you are running mission critical applications and especially significantly older versions of applications, the last thing you should be considering is doing any operating system upgrade other than absolutely essential bug and security patches. This is especially true for MacOS for which maintenance of application compatibility with new OS versions has been at best a very big challenge.

For better or worse, if you plan to upgrade to a new computer or a new OS version, you should include in your budget of expenses and time the costs of upgrading your applications to the most recent version known to be supported under that OS version. If you can't afford the new application versions, you really can't afford the new hardware or OS!

There's quite a difference between £20 for an OS and £900 for a software upgrade. I simply don't have the money to upgrade my Adobe Suite at this current time (I won't go into my financial situation as frankly it's no one's business). As I've stated if it doesn't work with Lion then so be it but I didn't think there was harm in asking the question. My CS3 worked fine up until the last update, it's not working fine now. If that's as far as I can upgrade my OS without killing it I'll live with that but upgrading to Lion was for the machine as a whole, not just for the benefit of the Adobe package I own. Do you feel this way about everyone who is trying to get Lion and CS3 working, because presumably they're not upgrading for similar reasons as I.

I am quite sensitive to the fact that you don't currently have the funding to upgrade your Adobe software. My point is that the real cost of upgrading your OS is absolutely not just the $ or £ that you spend for the OS upgrade itself, but really should include the cost of necessary application software upgrades. Your real cost of upgrading MacOS to 10.7 is not the quoted £20!

By the way, if you use an older version of Microsoft Office on your Macintosh, upgrading the OS to 10.7 will cause major problems with those applications as well. Thus, the cost of the OS upgrade includes the cost of upgrading the OS itself plus upgrading your Adobe software, your Microsoft Office software, and possibly a plethora of other third party utilities and applications. Also add in the value of your time.

On a macbook pro, no other drives attached and am at the OS level (IT tech here by trade). I found the files in question and removed but still got the same result (crash)... even after a restart of the mac.

On a sidebar, I did the same thing to my installation on my iMac and the same result occurred. The files are deleted from the OS level library-->printers-->PPD--> (the various folders you list) and the same thing happened. The app crashes as it calls up the adobe print dialog box (am suspicious that if it were calling the OS print dialog then we might not have this problem).

As it stands the PPD's are history on both installations of Lion on both machines but the apps still crash when printing (I can work using the export to PDF option and printing from Acorbat but it's a hassle to go that extra step...)

Thanks for the feedback though, I guess my only other option is to reinstall the app suite and see if that resolves it.

It seems like trashing the Adobe Acrobat PPDs solves the problem mentioned. Could a simple update to those from Adobe be enough to satisfy those who can't switch to the lastest suite? Or is it technically impossible to create a backward compatible Acrobat PPD for Lion?

I'll hop on my soapbox again.

There is no way anyone should have upgraded a production machine running old software to Lion. In fact, I'd question the sanity of doing so even with the most current versions. Adobe has a very lengthy "known issue" document that should scare anyone away since it's only the known issues that are on there. I'm quite sure that there are plenty of unknown ones, also.

    You are correct.

You should never update a production machine without knowing the consequences or having a way back to the old OS.

However, absent thorough testing and transparency from software companies about specific compatibility issues, we must do some testing on our own.

Before I updated my test machine, I visited the http://roaringapps.com/ site which has a nice list of software compatibility issues.

In my case, the Microsoft Office Suite 2008 seems to run OK so far, and I also run the 2011 suite on another Lion machine. Both the 2008 and 2011 suites do not take advantage of new Lion UI features. Microsoft has indicated that it is working on making the upcoming version compatible with Lion.

Glad to hear this is a test machine. Based on history, there's no way Adobe is going to go back and update CS3 or CS4 for compatibility with Lion.

My advice: If you're not prepared to deal with the problems stick with Snow Leopard until such time that you're willing to upgrade to a current version of Adobe software.

THANK YOU! This worked for me instantly! One follow up question,

I noticed a folder not listed in your list, titled OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/it.lproj

I did not remove it but was wondering if I should?

    Hi Again Alsolve

As you know this fix did not work for me and I did check that I was in the root folder, however Inside the primary drive folder, and in the library -> Printers -> there is also a folder called PPD Plugins and inside that folder are two files called:

    AdobePDFPDE700.plugin

    AdobePDFPDE800.plugin

Do you think I should remove that entire folder as well as the other files you said to remove.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

    Oh no, pleas NOoooo...

Deleting those PPD files worked for me and then at the end of the day I shut down the computer as I normally do, the next day the problem was there again, crashing ID CS3 when trying to print. I'm not going to delete the PPD's every time I start up the computer.

What is the next means for a fix then, Buy CS5?

    Does CS5 work with Lion?

I want to be sure before I plunk down the money to upgrade.

    Thanks,

I am gathering that it is best to simply wait, make do with the problems for now, and it will be sorted out at some time in the future. I'll wait until Adobe announces that the new CS6 package works with Lion and then buy at that time. The print from PDF is a work-around for now.
