Has anyone else noticed all the links for the Authorware Web Players on the Adobe site go to pages that say "Temporarily Unavailable"?
Not good...
I have contacted Adobe support (UK) who said they would pass it on to their 'Senior Engineers'.
That was a week ago - still no response!
Perhaps if more users contact Adobe there might be some action (or am I being naive here?) Or at least some response.
The UK number is: 0207 365 0735
As found on the UK Adobe site at: http://www.adobe.com/uk/aboutadobe/contact.html
You will need to navigate your way through the automated menu to get to speak to a real person.
Thank you to all who sent me a copy of the Web Player install file. If you are in need of the Player, and do not feel comfortable receiving an exe file from a stranger, I did find a site that has a link to the Authorware Web Player 2004.
http://download.cnet.com/Authorware-Web-Player/3000-2139_4-51364.html
I downloaded that file and it looks to only be an installer for Netscape. It prompts to select the Netscape (or Mozilla/Firefox) browser but on a machine that has IE only it doesn't appear to work. Is there an installer specific to IE?
I've gotten IE to work by manually loading/registering the webplayer files (awswax.ocx & np32asw.dll) but we are looking for a more user friendly method to get it to work with IE.
I actually have the installer available here:
http://www.awaretips.net/Authorware_samples.php
last item in the list. It's been there for a while, I just forgot about
it. Grab as needed, or don't ![]()

Hi Steve,
It's been a while since I worked with Authorware, but I have some old courses out there, and now I'm getting notices that new clients are unable to download the player. I would appreciate it if you could send the IE .exe to: Paul dot Swanson at harlandfs dot com
Thanks for still being there for us!

Hi,
Having received no help whatsoever from Adobe customer support, apart from referring me to the 'Feedback' section of 'Contact Adobe' which does not list Authorware as one of the possibilities for feedback, I revisited the Adobe Authorware site and found this at http://www.adobe.com/support/authorware/
'Adobe has discontinued support for this product. Adobe will honor all paid technical support contracts until they expire. Basic warranty technical support will expire on August 1, 2011. For additional support, visit the Authorware Community Forum. '
When did this appear? Notice the wording - 'has' not 'is going to' - was there ever a 'is going to' with a specific date?
I suspect that it may not be a coincidence that the plugin download site became 'temporarily'!! unavailable around about the same date.
However, since Adobe are still selling Authorware (at an extortionate price) and advertising it on their own site as '' the leading visual authoring tool for creating rich-media e-learning applications for delivery on corporate networks, CD/DVD, and the Web", one would think that they would be duty-bound to make the plugin available for download as part of the package. Interestingly the Mac player download site still seems to be alive at http://wwwmacr-sjc0.adobe.com/mena/products/authorware/productinfo/mac player/
Following the advice given by Adobe above on their site, does this mean that the 'Authorware Community' could legally set up its own plugin download site if the Adobe download site fails to re-appear?

Don
Don the last time that page was updated was July 2009.
My memory says that the first two sentences that you quote have been
there for a lot longer than that.
I think, though, that the continued silence form Adobe is answer
enough. I'll post copies of the Web Player installers to my blog, or
links to them, as soon as I have a moment.
If Adobe objects, then they need to resurrect the files on their
servers and respond to genuine approaches for information.
Steve
Thanks Steve,
I thought that the update-date at the bottom refers of the page refers to their 'Online Privacy Policy' since it also appears on many of Adobe's other pages but I guess that I might have missed the announcement of a specific date by not requiring any Adobe support and thus not visiting the page. I would have expected to see it in the FAQ section relating to the discontinued development of AW.
A readily accessible copy of the plugins from a trusted source would be useful for many.
If you could post a message on this site when you get around to putting it on your blog that would be great.
Many thanks for all your support
Cheers
Don
I see that it's fixed here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/triggerpages_mmcom/authorware. html
I was also looking at a different link which is not fixed (it's the first result when you google "authorware player"): http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=S hockwaveAuthorware
It still seems to end up here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=AWPf ull
OK it works for IE but not Firefox
Cool - that does indeed seemt to work, though it is hard to find without a bookmark.
Any chance of getting these fixed too?

Anyone have any other dead pages in their bookmarks?
Steve
Hi All & Beverley,
The plugin download/install works fine in IE and it is good to see some promotional links for AW on the Installation Complete animation - thanks.
However I confirm that the download does not work in Firefox nor I presume in any browser other than IE.
In Firefox, the page:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/triggerpages_mmcom/authorware. html
Prompts:
This leads to prompt:
'Additional plugins are required to view this page'
Result:
'Plugin finder finds no suitable plugins'
Selection of [Manual Install] leads to:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=AWPf ull
Which is still 'Temporarily unavailable'
A repair to allow download of the Netscape version of the plugin for other browsers would be very welcome.
BTW - does anyone know if the IE version is revised or just the original version linked by updated pages?
