I have downloaded Adobe Reader on LinuxMint 11 using Firefox.
The file appears in the download directory.
When I click it, I am asked to choose an application to open it with.
Can someone please explain how to get Adobe Reader installed.
Thanks in anticipation.
In my experience Reader displays PDFs in better quality.
We use Reader over other Linux viewers to display music score to the students.
Installing Linux packages depends on your distribution. If it's RPM based, you can use rpm or yum to install it. Google your distribution and see what it is based on - Redhat/RPM or Debian/deb.
Thanks rdr_usr,
I found out that I need the .rpm version of adobe reader.
I downloaded this version but still cannot figure out how to install it into LinuxMint 11 Katya.
My .pdf documents still open up using Document Viewer.
I have successfully installed yum, but get the following output from terminal...
yum install tmp/AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.rpm
You need to be root to perform this command.
What does the above mean?
And have you any idea why it is not possible to copy and paste the above from terminal to this post? Copy and paste from terminal always works on other forums. I had to type it in here.
Best regards,
Peter Sullivan.
Peter,
You got yum, that's a good start. From here you can choose two paths: one is to use console commands from terminal, like:
su
rpm -Uvh AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.rpm
exit
or
su
yum install tmp/AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.rpm
exit
Another path is to install yumex and run it from your favourite desktop - gnome or KDE or whatever.
yumex will pop-up a prompt for root password, which you type in and it runs under root.
See which option better suits your style. Once Reader is installed, it may or may not have to be registered to handle PDF files as a default viewer.
In my experience with Fedora/GNOME installing Reader registers it as a default viewer, but Firefox&Thunderbird still use document viewer. I could not figure how to point them at the Reader yet, as it is registered as a handler for PDF files (just doesn't get called).
HTH!
Thanks for that info rdr_usr.
Why does this all have to be so extremely complicated?
I tried the two su commands in terminal, but all I got was
su: Authentication failure
So then I downloaded yumex, but it seems that downloading it is all I can do. How to get it to do anything is a complete mystery. I have clicked on just about every file in every folder of yumex but nothing of any use happens.
What extra is required after downloading yumex to be able to do anything with it?
Best regards, Peter Sullivan.
I agree, it is complicated.
You've mentioned that you installed yum earlier. yumex should be installed exactly same way.
Unfortunatelly I am not familiar with your distribution of Linux. Probably you should research package management in LinuxMint.
On Redhat, you install packages from repositories by running 'sudo yum install XYZ'.
Hi I am running Mint 11 too ..... Well, Adobe Reader is needed as well as document viewer as I found some sites' pdfs aren't supported by DV alone, such as one I am getting as we speak ! I was redirected to http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ and downloaded that............. Works perfect, hope this helps ![]()
