Hello, I'm using Flash 11 in Widows XP, with an Nvida 8600GT.
I find the performace to be poor, with even lo-res video - it's choppy.
I'm running the Nvida driver version 266 from 01/11. Is it possible if I update my
driver, I may get a better response from playing flash video's?
Why does Flash use so much CPU just to play a tiny video?
Even youtube video's that are just audio and a still video picture
consume vast amounts of cpu. How do you explain it?

What browser do you use?
Do you have IE9 software rendering enabled?
Do you have Flash Player Hardware Acceleration disabled?

I do not have IE9 installed; I'm using Firefox 7x in Windows XP.
I have toggled HW acceleration on/off, restarted FF to test the same video again,
and it plays smoother with acceleration disabled .
With acceleration disabled I see 50% cpu (approx) being used, while with it enabled
It's 30 - 40 % .
The CPU is an AMD 4200 x2 dual core.

Yes it could help to update your graphics driver. It is odd that playback is smoother with hardware acceleration off, so I wonder if it is a driver issue. Please let me know if updated driver doesn't help the issue.

Updating to Nvidia driver 280.26 has indeed improved the situation. Still using about 45 - 50% of a dual core AMD64 x2 4200 (2.2 GHz x 2) to play a youtube
720p video in it's pop-out window (acceleration active). Would you expect this much ?
At least it's smoother now.

Good news! The cpu usage does sound a little high, but considering that the content is 720p and your card does not support video decode the decoding is taking place on your CPU, this is reasonable.

Please explain when you say the "card does not support video decode" You mean HW acceleration?
If it does not, where is the list of cards that are support with Flash?
My card certainly supports H264 acceleration running from the HDD usiong DXVA.
I can download the same 720p video and play it from my desktop using 2% CPU.
