I've been using Dreamweaver MX for about 5 years and have been using FTP throughout that period. About a week ago FTP started failing with the error message "An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host." My FTP log is blank, as if it did not attempt to make an FTP connection. If I save my site config and using that same site config in Dreamweaver CS5, then I can connect and use FTP without issue. I can also connect with other FTP programs, such as Filezilla. This confirms that I am using correct login information, and FTP is available for the website. Switching to passive FTP did not help. Removing and re-installing Dreamweaver MX did not help. Turning off all my firewalls did not help. Searching around the web, one person mentioned a similar issue being caused by the server that maintains the website changing their SSH host key changing and were able to resolve that by deleting Dreamweaver's ssh host file. For him the file was at ~/Library/Application Support/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration/ssh_hosts. However, it seems to be in a different location for Dreamweaver MX on my Widows 7 computer. Any ideas on what might be causing this or what I could try?
I would recheck the configurations all over again. In fact, the best thing is to delete the current configurations and then re-enter them again very carefully. 99% of the time people always make mistakes when re-entering the info. Also, it is a good idea to print the e-mail you might have received from your host and keep it in front of you when you are re-entering the FTP info.
If this fails, then you need to try using FileZilla, WS-FTP or something else to check whether your host hasn't messed up your account in some material way. They do all the time because they like poking their noses in almost anything when they don't have anything to do.

As I said in the post above, I have already tried Filezilla -- it works. I've also tried saving the config including FTP username and password and opening that same config in Dreamweaver CS5. That also works. I've gone so far as to remove Dreamweaver MX from my computer including the site config, and reinstall + re-enter the site config. In all cases, FTP fails in Dreamweaver MX and works without issue in CS5.
If you have both CS5 and MX, why not just uninstall MX? It's outdated and the error could be a conflict with an OS that postdates DW MX by over 7 years. Adobe has no announced plans to support MX and seeing how they released CS5.5 after CS5, I don't foresee them going backwards to fix the problem.
I've been using FTP with MX and my current operating system for months without issue. FTP started failing without any coinciding operating system change or settings change on my computer. There are two reasons I'd like to continue using MX. I own MX. I do not own CS5 and instead am using a trial version that expires in under 30 days. And in the short time I've been using CS5, I am finding some missing/different fuctionality from MX that makes it awkward to update my website, which was created with MX. For example, the other day I added a row to a table on my website. Some of the data cells in the table use Arial font with size 2, which overides the default css. Other cells use the default size from my css file. With MX5, I can highlight the cells, left click, then select Arial with size 2. CS5 defaults to CSS styling and does not appear to have a size 2 option in the left click menu (it does have an option for Arial). There probably is a way to do what I want in CS5 without redesigning my site, but for now I'd like get MX working again, rather than get used to a new web design program.

How about if you take a gamble and reinstall your DW MX? It could solve the problem. IMHO
Well - this is a very good suggestion but what puzzles me is why should a software that worked for 5 years suddenly stopped working. This is completely beyond any sensible reasons.
I think the MX was initially working in either Windows 2000 or Windows XP and now the NA770 decided to install the same product in Windows 7. If this is so then it looks like it must be a question of rights attached to that user. The OP should, perhaps try using as an ADMINISTRATOR or a USER account with those privileges to see if it is anything to do with the rights/security issues of Windows 7.
We don't know if the product is still running on the old operating system/machine. 5 years ago we didn't have Windows 7 and MX was released well before XP was released.
I am reluctant to suggest to reformat the HD and clear any bugs that might have entered the system but it is up to the OP to decide now.
There is no solution to this problem assuming all the configuration settings are correct as claimed in this thread.
I have been using MX on Windows 7 for several months without issue. The problems didn't coincide with switching operating systems. I doubt the issues have anything to do with Windows 7. In the blog at http://www.mytechmusings.com/2007/12/dreamweaver-ftp-and-annoying-cann ot.html , someone mentioned a similar issue being caused by a change in server host key and Dreamweaver maintaining it's own host key that needs to be updated to the new settings. He was able to solve the issue by deleting Dreamweaver's SSH host key. Where would I find the corresponding file on my setup (MX on Windows 7)?

Your FTP client (be it Dreamweaver or Filezilla) is only 50% of the equation. There was probably a server side change that CS5 can handle and MX can't. Check with your host.
If they have updated something that makes MX obsolete for connecting, then it's yet another reason to finally let go of seven year old software.
