Problem with publishing Collection under 3.5

Oct 1, 2011 7:18 AM

Hi,

Is anyone else having problems with collections in V3.5 (Win64)?

When I try to update my existing collections, that have modified and new photos in them, then I get an error message:

'Can't Update this Collection. An internal error has occurred: Assertion failed'

Has anybody else seen this problem? The setup of my collections hasn't changed, so not sure what's going on.

Thanks,

Andy.

I'm getting exactly the same problem. I am experimenting with exporting the smart collections in the publish service, deleting them and re-importing them. Not ideal of course but desperate for a workaround.

I use publish services all the time so I'm convinced this problem is entirely due to the new version (3.5) that I installed yesterday.

Just to note that the export-delete-import workaround seems to fix it. Will post any more experiences on this thread if I have them..

I am experiencing the same problem, but only in deleting items from the collection. I am not sure if it because I may have archived the master files onto a CD or not, but it will publish new images to the Publish Service.

By the way, I am having the problems on a Win 32 system with Lightroom 3.5.

No matter how I tried to solve it by removing and adding to get around the failure. I did not want to remove all of the published pictures so I downgraded (copied over the old version from a mirror), all works fine now.

    Hi,

I have the same Problem. On existing folders which where genereted by earlier Version, I'm getting the Message that "An internal error has occurred: Assertion failed'. When I create new Publishing Services there is no problem. Only with the existings.

    Any Help?

Andy, thanks for posting the workaround of re-creating the old publish services/collections.

If anyone hasn't yet done this, and still has a publish collection that demonstrates the problem, can you post a pic of the publish settings for that collection?  I'd like to try to figure out what is happening, but haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet.

    Thanks,
    Becky

If it can give any lead, I found this

    file:///Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-2/66*-30_Mona.jpg

    file://localhost/Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-3/

    file:///Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-3/66*-30_Mona.jpg

    file://localhost/Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-4/

    file:///Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-4/66*-30_Mona.jpg

    file://localhost/Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-5/

    file:///Div%20temp%20BU/iPadBild/prim/tmp-5/66*-30_Mona.jpg

in root of all published folders (after reverting to 3.41)

a tmp folder created for each failed try?

Thanks for the info.  I have some more questions.  (Andy, you answered some of these in your latest reply, so you just need to respond to the ones not already answered.)

    1.  When you click on the publish collection, what segments do you see in the grid?  (Deleted Photos to Remove, Modified Photos to Re-Publish, New Photos to Publish, Published Photos)

    2. Are any of the images in the collection missing or offline?  If so, which segments do they appear in?

    3. Is this only happening with smart publish folders?  Has anyone seen it with regular publish folders? too?

    4. So far, all reports indicating an OS have mentioned Windows.  Is anyone seeing this on Mac?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Becky!

    Windows XP SP3

In the grid I see Published Photos and either Modified Photos to Republish or Deleted Photos to Remove.

I checked all of my publish services for issues. I don’t use Smart Folders. Just haven’t.

In one Hard Drive service I had two DNG images in the Modified category. When I pressed Publish, one did and the second did not, returning the error message about the Assertion. That file is still in the library and on disc in the proper folder.

In a second Hard Drive service I have twenty-one images listed as Deleted Photos to Remove. None of them will “remove.” They are all on disc and in the Lightroom library.

In three Jeffrey Friedl Publish Services (Facebook, Flickr and Zenfolio I had several modified photos to republish. They all went up the pipe OK.

Several regular folders. (I have no smart ones)

    4. So far, all reports indicating an OS have mentioned Windows.  Is anyone seeing this on Mac?

    All on 10.6.8

Mac user here.  I am running Lion version 10.7.1 on a brand new 3.4 Ghz Quad Core iMac.  Just uploaded to LR3 3.5 yesterday and now I am unable to publish from exsisting folders.  I just added a couple of new images to folders and got the an't Update this Collection. An internal error has occurred: Assertion failed'" message.

Here is another mac user under Lion , I have the same problem with smart publish folders to a local hard disk: once upgraded to 3.5 I get the "Assertion failed error". Never saw this in previous versions...

And I have the problem with new images in the smart folder, so it's quite annoying not be able to publish them any more

becs, I'm a Vista 64bit user with the exact same problem, just introduced in 3.5.

I have a hard drive smart collection publishing service that I add to every once in a while. My criteria are set to keyword matches "family", rating >= 4, date/time between 1/1/2011 and 12/31/2011. I've published to it dozens of times, and never seen this error until the first try post 3.5 upgrade. To answer more of your questions:

    1) New Photos to Publish, Modified Photos to Re-Publish, Published Photos

    2) None missing or offline.

Note that I have the exact same smart collection settings on a SmugMug publisher that I'm still able to use with no problems.

Here's hoping for a quick fix! Let me know if I can help further.

I am getting the same error (Vista 64, LR 3.5) but I was able to publish in one circumstance. When publishing to hard disk, I deleted the existing exported files from the disk, and the collection from Lightroom. I recreated the collection, published the whole thing, and no error. For smart collections, this was no problem, I just redid the rules. For standard collections, I added a "temp" keyword to the files in the old collection, deleted the collection and readded the tagged photos. Not the most ideal way, and it is only pratical for small-medium exports, but it will work until the bug is addressed.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and am experiencing the same issue.

I'm going to export the settings and recreate the smart collection.

Thanks for all the information.  I've been able to repro this, and have logged a bug.  The problem exists with publish collections that were created in LR 3.3 or earlier. The only workarounds I've found for you to use in the interim is to either recreate the collection in LR 3.5 or, in the case of a smart published folder, export the collection settings and re-import.

This has been fixed in Lightroom 3.6 Public RC, available at http://labs.adobe.com/.

Becs --  I gather LR 3.6 is not a fully released version yet.  How safe is it to install? Or when will it be fully released?  I can live with my problem for a little while if I know a fix is coming.

If you want more info, FYI:  I have the same problem.  I'm using LR 3.5 on Windows 64.

I'm using smart publish folders to write subfolders in a master folder on my hard drive.

The folder structure looks like this:

    Final JPEGS

    > 2000 photos

    > 2001 photos

    > 2002 photos

    ....

    > 2011 photos

The smart folder rules combine a condition with a date range.  For example, the 2011 folder says:  If label = green (that means I want to publish it) and date created was in 2011.

I've been publishing this way for a long time.  In the last few days I tried to publish some new photos and republish some modified ones to my 2011 photos folder and I get this error:

"Can't update this collection.  An internal error has occurred:  assertion failed!"

I also get it when I try to republish photos to other folders in the same master folder (e.g., 2007 photos). In fact, all my smart published folders throw this error.

As an experiment I created a new smart publish folder in the same master folder with the same rule except I narrowed the date range to limit the photos to just ones taken in Nov.  This worked just fine (BTW, this folder contained many of photos I was trying unsuccessfully to publish to my 2011 folder).  I'm not sure what conclusions to draw from this.

FYI: All of the folders generating this error have a surprising number of "modified" photos in them, although I did not modify them (could it be from saving meta data to the hard drive?)
