This is the 1st serious effort to build a site: http://www.hellenicastrology.gr/
Tell me what you think about it.
΅Why narrower page width?
On what basis you are saying this?
You are probably right but i want to hear the explanation-for educational(
) purposes.
I agree that the text is very close to Ptolemy but i did not got your comment in relation Platon and Aristoteles.
Do you mean that the text is very close also to Platon and Aristoteles?
Is that what you mean?
Do you want to say that i must increase the space between the text and the figures (Ptolemy,Platon,Aristoteles.)
P.S You seem to know some stuff of Ancient Greece. Am i correct? Or you just saw the code?
Jim, apologizing for the late answer,
In addition to what Marian said, even visitors with higher resolutions may wish to keep Bookmarks visible, thus reducing the effective width; I use a number of Bookmarks many times every day, including Adobe Forums bookmarks for returning after archiving Print View versions of threads. Obviously, it is always better to avoid the horizontal scrollbar.
I believe about the 1024 might be suitable, if you choose to have a fixed width. Some years ago, the answer would have been 800.
You may also consider a more fluid design with a variable width, for parts of the page(s), especially something like text. You can do that by setting the total width to 100% rather than to a number of pixels; you can set some elements to fixed widths and others to adapt.
Do you mean that the text is very close also to Platon and Aristoteles?
They are almost standing upon their names, in contrast to Ptolemy who is almost pushed by the general text.
I believe you have to give them some space. After all they think big.
P.S You seem to know some stuff of Ancient Greece. Am i correct? Or you just saw the code?
Neither, really; I do have some knowledge, but I just read the names.
I got it why i should reduce the width of the column.
I see many sites today where the content stretches all over the screen, like this:http://www.narniayachtcharter.co.uk/.
Obviously, this is a fluid desing.
Summing it up, in order to make a site that stretches all over the screen and still can be viewed in lower resolutions, the design must be of the fluid type.
When it is fixed, i must use as a rule 1024px.
Correct?
1024 is the maximum of a common screen size but with window decorations and scrollbars you get less. A common design size is 960.
In addition to fluid layouts, there are also adaptive and responsive layouts.
Jim,
I see many sites today where the content stretches all over the screen, like this:http://www.narniayachtcharter.co.uk/.
Obviously, this is a fluid desing.
Not really.
The text is completely fixed instead of reflowing with the width. When you increase the width, the text just uses a smaller proportion of the available width, and when you decrease it (enough) you get the ugly horizontal scrollbar.
Thanks for making a note about the loading time.
Regarding the space now in the bottom.(to be precise, i assume you mean the whitespace below the site footer)
Well, i agree with you. i have not find a solution to this yet.
Something in the css needs fixing.
I will see it and get back to you.
Sorry for my late response.
You said that the site loads slowly.
First of all, do you have a tool that gives you such a metric, and if yes, in order to say that loads slowly you must have compare it probably with
some average number, is that correct?
Or you just reached at that conclusion from careful observation, someone with experience must have?
Ok. I go and optimize the site to load faster, is the first step(and more important probably) making the images size smaller?
Give me some help on this please since, in download optimization I am amateur.
Thanks

Is there any rule of thumb to follow about what the size should be of an average site?
Less than 200KB for most sites. 300KB for entertainment sites.
Decide who your target audience is and build accordingly. Most people have access to broadband/DSL/Satelite connections. But a shocking number of people in rural areas (even in the US) are stuck with slow dial-ups because that's all that is available. Also many mobile device users are now charged by the amount of bandwidth they use. As a courtesy, try to be as efficient as you can.
You can trim page size quite a bit by using thumbnail size images. Always optimize images before inserting them in web pages. In Photoshop (File > Save for web & other devices). Optimize until it noticably degrades picture quality, then back off a tad. See screenshot from Photoshop's 4-up panel for comparing image quality.

I managed to optimize many images-using Fw.
Now, the site is below 200kb. I did not know i could reduce so much the image sizes with the aid of optimization.
I did know fast downloading times are an issue, nonetheless, in this site i did not consider it seriously-as i do not have much experience in
web dev.

I would use a different background color around the content, other than white. Just try it...
For instance in your template.css :
body {
background-color: #1f0202;
font-size: 100%;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
And add an extra line to:
#header, #all {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
width: 960px;
}
I would also make the blue links at the bottom a different color. Not only when visited...
I made the change in the background-color and it seems to me that it is "heavy" for the user's eyes, it could be implemented though with some tweaks-that is another story of course.
Regarding the links now. All of them are in white now except the "designed by" link which bears my name. In your pc, are the links appearing white now when visited?
Except of course-as i said-the link of the designed by needs adjustment-it still appears blue.
Hope this question is not regarded as spam:
I've just launched a new website: gokkastenweb.com .
What do you think what do you think about the general design?
I'm posting this because I think a different background color does wonders for a website.
