want to know about some of the tools in Elements

Nov 10, 2011 11:25 AM

I am a photoshop user, but have an older version. I was looking at maybe buying Elements, but I can't really find any info. about some of the tools that I use in PS, which might also be available in Elements. What I'm interested in:

Ability to open and adjust Raw files.

Ability to create layers.

Apply blending modes to the layer. This ones I use the most are: overlay, multiply, screen, hue, soft light, etc.

Apply differnt adjustments--as layers--such as Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation

Differnt filters: Blur, Sharpen, High Pass.

Also, is there a place where I can see the tools/features available. Understandably, the product web page is slick, but I can't seem to find this info.

Best, David

    Yes to all... but :

    - The ACR version is limited to the basic, detail and camera calibration

    - Layers only in 8 bits.

Why not download the trial version ?

There's a free 30-day demo you can and probably should try if you're seriously thinking about buying PSE. Everything in your list is in PSE, but the PSE raw converter doesn't have all the features it does in PS. It only has the basic and details tabs, and in the calibration tab you can't edit profiles--only select from the preloaded ones. Basically the PSE raw converter is frozen at early CS2 level--addition that have been made in PS since then, like tone curves, haven't made it to the PSE version. It's the same plug-in, but the interface doesn't include all the features.

If you shoot mainly raw you could also give Lightroom 3 a free trial. It has the full raw engine of CS5 in it’s own intuitive interface. It’s the perfect combination with Elements as an external editor.

Yes, I agree. If raw conversion is your main objective, LR is the way to go.
