m4v file needs transcoding in Blu-ray project

m4v is produced by Media Encoder

However, when imported into Encore, it's shown as untranscoded. When I try to build, it will start transcoding process.

What's causing this?

There seems to be a bug in Encore ( i have not encountered it yet) with the vbr 2pass.
Set VBR to 1 pass, see how that works out.

I agree with Ann, since nothing else is working. Jeff has posted elsewhere (I linked part of it) suggesting that the VBR 2 pass is only an issue in High profile? And Ann, you are using VBR 2 pass without problem?

Yes with high profile, tried different settings also in ntsc (as i am on pal), I have never seen this issue.
Nor in CS5 or CS4.

Not in my case.

I have always run VBR 2 Pass

But due to various reason, I had many High and a few Main.

All of those High are working

The only one with problem is the recent one with Main

I am running 5.5

I played some trick with it: choose Locate transcode file -> Blu-ray and pick the same file. Then try to build it. During importing, it errors our:

Blu-ray Object: "<Timeline>video", Error: "invalid format", Code: "14",

Note: "ERROR: This stream doesn't include Picture timing SEI, Unit Offset = 508122323"

Searched and found

I am not sure if this is the same problem. My encoding setting is automatic. The result m4v shows

Scan order : Top Field First

Still, I will give it try and report back

Explcit setting of upper does not change the result. Still the same problem.

Did you use the same name to save the file or did rename.

On a side note: if something is not working right in Encore I start over in a fresh Encore project. Usually it turns out fine.

Different name and folder. Fresh project tried. None is working.

Are we sure this is an Encore bug, not an AME bug? The above error shows a positon info. Is it possible to translate into the timeline point? I've tried the 30 second and it works just fine. So I suspect there is some part of the timeline is causing this problem.

Yes, the exact same setting in AME but only the first 30 seconds of the 2 hour video. It imports just fine with "Don't Transcode". A bug in AME will be more serious than in Encore in my opinion. Quite often I don't keep all the source material over a year.

I always go through AME never seen this.
Check for gaps, they can cause 'weird' behaviour.

I've tried to 1 min and 20 min with the gap right in the middle. The result imported just fine.

Do you know how to translate the position number in the above error message to position on timeline?

I have 2 projects with this problem. I've checked the 2nd project and it has no gap.

I've split the entire video into 4 segments in AME, a-d. Piece b is the only one with this problem. Then I split it into 4 piece b1 to b4. Now none of them has this problem.

segment b is 40 min long. It has no filter other than a few still on top of video.

This has to be the most frustrating thing I have ever had.

Let's assume there is corruption in the clip. That would be good troubleshooting. The b1 - b4 having no error in any of them is odd.

Unusual, but I have had to go back and recapture.

I don't see that we asked: what is the source?

The source is AVCHD from Canon camcorder. I have 20+ projects. Only the recent 2 have this problem.

If b1-b4 are all ok, I don't see how corruption could be the cause.

Does anyone have a good m4v joiner? I will try to join the segments to see what happens.

You do not need a 'joiner' you can put all the pieces in one Encore timeline.

I want joiner/splitter to see if the problem is in the joined m4v. My concern is whether the bug is in AME, which makes it more serious

And when there is more one m4v on a timeline, does it playback with any delay in b/w?

I've used tsMuxeR 1.10.6 to do the joining. Output is set to Demux. The result file plays out just fine.

When b1-b4 are joined, the result requires transcoding, even though none of them require transcoding.

If I put segment a, b1-4, c, d into the timeline, Encore seems to handle everything properly and produces the Blu-ray folder output that's played fine.

I'd think at this point it's more likely to be a bug in Encore than AME.

Again, this is really frustrating.

Investigation #2: more likely a bug in AME

I took the second project and used tsMuxeR to mux and split the m4v+ac3 files repetitively. It narrowed down a 3 second segment which has this transcoding requirement. -- If you know a program that can do this w/o muxing, please let me know. I had no luck so far.

I then removed 1 second from the beginning of the clip and added an Encore marker (which to my knowledge force I frame)

The result m4v file worked out fine in Encore. This might mean a bug in AME, which is more serious.

I went back to project 1 and did the same. This time 6 30-second segments have this problems. This is too much for me I gave up on that investigation.

I've uploaded the file and let the Adobe developer to take a look at the 3-second m2ts (I can't find any other tool so I have to mux it). Let's see what they find out.

Could we please get the bug fix as a patch/update? CS6 is probably quite a few months away and it's going to cost some money for sure.

This has to be a bug in AME CS5.5, having the same exact problem:

Anyway, I have CS5 installed on my Windows partition and tried adding the .m4v file to Encore CS5 and Encore still wanted to transcode it which leads me to believe that it's a problem with the encode using AME.

I was able to open my Premiere CS5.5 project in CS5 without an issue so I'm going to just have to encode using AME CS5 under my Windows partition until Adobe issues a patch for this extremely inconvienient problem.

There are few things more frustrating than sitting through an eight hour encode only to learn Encore wants to do that again when you know it shouldn't have to.

An Adobe developer said it's a bug in Encore and it's fixed in development. To me it's good news so we don't need to spend hours waiting for another encoding. But my concern is whether i need to shell out some money for a bug fix.
