.AVI File won't play in CS4, Gspot says all Codecs are properly installed

Hello,

I'm trying to edit a video in adobe premier pro from an Olympus XZ-1 (.avi file/mpjeg) but it doesn't play at all.

I tried to find if there where any codecs missing with Gspot, but it says all codecs are in place.

What else can be the problem and how can I solve it?

There is a mjpeg codec installed on you computer to play mjpeg but not to edit.
You need to install (rather buy or use the trial version) the mjpeg codec in order to be able to edit in Premiere.

Thank you for your quick responses.

I've installed the trial version of Morgan Multimedia mpjeg2000 codec, however I only see a black screen when playing in Adobe Premier, I do still hear the sound of the video.
Before installing Morgan, I only saw a still image of the video. Unfortunately the problem hasn't been solved yet. Is there anything what I can do about it on a short notice? I need to have some videos up and running from my website soon.

I would first look closely at the software disc with the Oly camera. Some mfgrs. tweak CODEC's, and especially the MJPEG. There should be a proper MJPEG CODEC, but it might not be easy to locate, as it could be a separate installation (maybe in a "Goodies" folder?), or might install with the camera's driver, or it might install with some editing, or acquisition software. For whatever reason, most camera mfgrs. do not make their CODEC installations clear to the end-user.

If that does not work, then definitely try the MainConcept MJPEG CODEC.

Thanks for your replies. I've tried Mainconcept and also the latest version of Olympus Viewer. Nothing helped and the files still doesn't play in Premiere. I'm getting hopeless now, and I've send an e-mail to the Olympus support team.

Find your camera on the vendor web site and then see if they have any downloads to install to make their files work with software other than their own

Or, if they have their own editing software to work with their files

I don't have/know your camera, but I do know (have read here) that camera vendors sometimes "tweak" the codec they use, which makes the files difficult or impossible to edit

I'd like to know how to fix this too...Adobe Customer Support won't help me unless I shut down, go back to my home office, and offer them every number I can muster up to prove that the software I bought isn't stolen?

I'm using a Nikon D3s and it's AVI files, and a Countour Headcam that uses MOV file types.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, there is a clearcut answer, with three possible variations.

First, the Nikon should have their version of the MJPEG CODEC on a utility disc. That CODEC might install via the camera's driver, might be a separate install from the disc, or might install as part of a utility (say an editing program) on that disc. Not sure exactly where it will be located, but I feel confident that Nikon will have provided it. That will be the best, as different camera mfgrs. tweak common CODEC's. Even if you do not plan on using an included utility, you might need to install it, just to get the Nikon MJPEG CODEC. I did that for a Canon, and a Panasonic, and got their specific CODEC's, for their AV files.

The two variations would be either the Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC, which will be a download and install. The weakness of these CODEC's is that they are more general, and might not reflect a Nikon tweak. That is why I mentioned Nikon's version first. It WILL be as good as it gets.

Good luck, and wish that I knew exactly where the Nikon MJPEG CODEC was located, or what process installed it, but if you find it added, after an installation, I would appreciate if you would update the thread, so that others will then know what to install, to get that CODEC.

Okay...so I see on my Nikon disc that came with my D3s has the Main Concept icon on it, but I believe I installed it correctly, and no dice.

If Nikon uses the MainConcept MJPEG CODEC, or their version of it (supplied), if it was installed properly, then you should have zero issues.

G-Spot, and some other utilities, have the function to query the system for installed CODEC's. I would use that, just to see if you have the MainConcept MJPEG CODEC installed. Note: Adobe uses a slightly different naming convention, to basically hide their installed CODEC's from other programs, that often have a bad habit of overwriting good CODEC's, with less desirable versions. Many of the free CODEC "packs" do this routinely. Do NOT be alarmed if G-Spot, Sherlock the CODEC Detective, etc., tell you that the various Adobe CODEC's (mostly MainConcept too) are broken. That is a false positive, and nothing to worry about.

Probably obvious by now, but I'm a photographer, and not a video guy (don't laugh). So, I also, really only know what I have to on a computer...so...

I think I installed correctly, but for some reason, my auto run wasn't working, so I just manually went through and installed things on the disc, but never did actually see two things that have icons listed on the disc...those being MainSource, and Muvee.

So, would there be a separate MainSource icon in my Programs Folder if done correctly?

Same thing...nothing plays. G spot says codec is installed on my avi files, but says 'undetermined' on my mov files.

Does the video have to be on my local drive to play? That was an issue with older Windows Movie Maker products. My avi and mov are all on an external, because there's so many of them.

May I ask a new question? If I have my main video in avi, And my clips in my video 2 line are mov, can they still be 'flattened' (photoshop talk there) and exported as something else? Mp4?

Yes. Though the resulting Export footage, both quality and also things like Frame Size, will be impacted by any differences between the two different Source Footage. There are many attributes, and the majority should match up.

Now, PrPro CS 5/5.5 with MPE/CUDA will do a better job with mixed footage, but if yours are mostly the same with regards to their attributes, such as pixel x pixel Frame Size, FPS, etc., they should work fine. Do an experiment by limiting the Timeline with the WAB (Work Area Bar), and study the results.

Okay, so in the cue for the media encoder, it says it's NTSC 176x144 @ 15 fps? That sounds terrible.

I started the project at 720 hd at 24fps. How can I keep it there?

I can get into preferences, but not export settings at the moment...I
suppose that's because I'm currently exporting.

So, I know I said part of this, but just for a little background, I"m a
photographer that normally uses Animoto, but, it doesn't always cut it for
me. I recently went to a conference for video making for photographers and
they were talking up Premiere Pro and how much they love it, but
unfortunately, didn't seem to get to too much of the part on how to use
it...although they did brief over a few ways to do some things in PrePro.

So, all of this is rather new to me, but I really like to program so far.

You could always try playing with the file extension type and see if that might work. For example video from a gopro is a .mp4 but I have to change it to a .mov to get premiere to accept it in cs3 so maybe try changing the extension to .mov

Installed the Morgan MJPEG codec - No change. Same thing. Works just fine in CS5 and below, just not CS6.
