Question before subscription : DPS Pro

Hi guys,

We work with the trial version for a couple of weeks now and we think about moving to the Professional Edition !

But I'm confused about the term .folio bundle download... What are they ?

With the Professional Edition Monthly platform fee US$495 (Monthly subscription) we get :

      • Includes all titles in a publishing customer's portfolio

Pretty clear !

    • Includes complimentary 5,000 (Annual) or 250 (Monthly) .folio files with first year of service

So I can have only 250 folio inside my DPS account ?

    • Includes Gold technical support, which provides 24x7 access to support resources

Ok !

    • A .folio bundle download fee — fee to deliver and fulfill publications across platforms and devices incurred each time a user downloads a .folio file

There I'm lost... Each download count as a folio bundle ? Or is it each publication ?

I know that these are pretty basic questions but I'm lost in the terminology...

Thanks in advance for your time and patience.

Jacques

    Hi Jacques,

The term ".folio bundle download" refers to a single download (by your user) of any folios inside a multi-issue application.

For example, say you release three folios inside your application for October, November and December.  If 100 people download each of them, that would count as 300 folio downloads.

The fees you refer to in the last bullet point are charged each time the issue is downloaded.  If a user buys an issue and downloads it, the fee is incurred.  If the user then deletes the issue and later downloads it again, the fee is charged once more.

".folio bundle download" credits are bought in various quantities, each impacting the resulting price.  I believe the highest price to be $0.30 USD.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no limit to how many folios a multi-issue application can contain.  There is also no limit to how many single-issue applications you can create.  And single-issue applications don't incur ".folio bundle downloads."

    Hope that helps!

    Jacques,

What about single folio application. One of my client would like to publish a medical guide for a specific drugs.

So we prepare a folio (with 10 articles inside of it). If I publish it... Each download of the app will count as a folio bundle download right ?

Single-issue applications do not incur download fees.  In the case of a single-issue mag, the entire application (including the one and only folio) are uploaded to Apple for inclusion in the App Store.  Any time a user buys or downloads the application, the files come directly from Apple.  As such, Adobe doesn't charge you for this.

In a multi-issue app, each folio is downloaded from Adobe so download credits will be used.

Moreover, I'm curious how Apple will classify my app if it's something like a manual for a drug... Will it be available through the newstand ?

Whether to enable your application for Newsstand or not is up to the developer.  Only multi-issue applications can be included in Newsstand, however.

My last question is about updating an app already publish on the appstore ! Let's say that there is a terrible typo into the project and I need to republish it... Is that something possible easily ?

Will user be able to redownload the app quite easily ? Will he be warn that a new version is available ?

My understanding is that fixing typos or correcting other errors can be accomplished easily with single-issue applications.  The update would appear in the Updates section of the App Store app on the device, as well as in iTunes under App Updates.

The way I understand it is that if you purchase the Single Application from Adobe for $395 you will be able to author one application with a single folio in it.  If you need to correct errors you will be allowed to do that, but you won't be able to add new content to the app.

With a subscription (Professional or Enterprise) you are able to create as many applications as you would like, so it stands to reason that you could continue to update your application to your heart's content so long as the subscription was paid up.

    @Steven;

    1. What's the difference between the App Store and Newstand?

    2. Single Edition publication can make corrections (grammar, spelling, copy) w/out additional fees?

    3. Sngle Edition has unlimited customer download?

    Thanks in advance

    Joe

    Hi Joe,

    1. The Newsstand is essentially a category inside the App Store, just like games or productivity apps.  However, on the user's home screen Apple has automatically sorted the Newsstand apps out into a bookshelf interface.  Being in Newsstand also opens up some new options for the app itself, such as the ability for your apps icon to update with each new issue of your magazine and the ability for your customer's iPads to automatically begin downloading your content in the background.

There's no different Developer Account with Apple or anything of that sort required to use Newsstand, but I suggest you check out the Apple Developer docs for information on all the little things that need to be done to enable Newsstand.

Also check out the following link for Apple's description of Newsstand:

    http://www.apple.com/ipad/built-in-apps/newsstand.html

    2. I'm not qualified to speak on this.  I know someone from Adobe has said so at one point, but what exactly qualifies as a correction and what qualifies as new content is beyond my pay grade.

I do know that if you have a Professional Edition or Enterprise Edition subscription you can make unlimited Single Issue apps.  You could, then, continue to update a Single Issue app as much as you desired.

    3. Yes.  In the case of a Single Issue your entire app (including the folio) come from Apple's servers, so you'll incur no per download fees from Adobe.  In the case of a Multi-issue app only a small viewer app (a few megabytes) comes from Apple while all of your content comes from Adobe.

    Hope that helps!

    Steven
