I'm desperate for help!

I have a photoshop file that has hours, weeks, months of work into it. I tried to open it today, and it says,"This document contains Adobe Photoshop data which appears to be damaged. Continue and ignore the Photoshop data? I then click on "Yes," and then it says, "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

 

I made this file with this version of Photoshop, so I'm not sure what that's all about. Also, I made several copies of it and stored it in several places, but when I try to open any of them, they all say the same thing.

 

This could drive me to drink!! I could just cry. I won't be able to replicate it and it's my main client. It's for a website. I thought I was safe because I made several copies at various times.

 

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended, Windows version.

    From the message it sounds like maybe you opened the file with a newer version of Photoshop, a trial, perhaps, and the older version cannot work with it, anymore?  Or perhaps the message is incorrect and the file is corrupted.  What type of file is it (PSD, PDF, TIF, RAW)?

     

    If the file does not have embarrassing or otherwise private data, you could try uploading the file to www.yousendit.com or www.dropbox.com and then posting a download link, here, for others to try that have newer versions of Photoshop in case that is what happened.

     

    A question about the backups.   Are all your other copies of it created since you last worked with it, so if there was some corruption when you last saved it, than all the backups are corrupted, or are some of the backups old enough that the file has worked ok since those were made, which would point to something happening to Photoshop rather than the file?

    Hi ssprengel,

     

    I didn't open the file with a newer version, trial, etc. I made the file and opened the file with the same version. It's a psd file. And I love your idea of uploading it for other people to try and open.

    aj, I downloaded your file and got the same message that you are receiving.  I hope someone helps you find a resolution.

    I tried your file with Advanced PSD repair, which is a free download, but it failed.  You could be out of luck, but if you Google Photoshop PSD Repair, there might another app that does the trick.

    I concur that you’re out of luck.  The best I could do with an online tool was get 5 PNGs extracted from the 506 layers the tool thought there might be.  4 of the PNGs were white rectangles of various shapes and sizes, and one was random junk, so none of the original layer images were findable, much less any masks or adjustment layers.

     

     

     

    Have you devised a new backup strategy that allows for more than one version of your work so you’ll be able to revert back to  a previous time if the current version has been corrupted?  From your initial post it sounded like you’d worked on the same PSD for months, but all your backups were corrupted, suggesting that your backups protected against current work being lost due to media failure, but not being lost due to corruption on Saving as apparently happened.

    Thank you so much for trying! I'm going to have to recreate the file I think.

     

    Can you advise me on what would be the best backup strategy for me so that this doesn't happen again? I am continually updating the PSD and saving the newest version, but how do I save it so that if there is a corruption problem, the previous one will be there for me?

    If you right-click the file in Windows Explorer, then choose Properties, then click the Previous Versions tab, are any previous versions listed?   There will be if you are backing up your system.
