Platform translation thread.

Hi all, in this thread, I'd like to gather all the specificities of one platform (Mac/PC) and its correspondence on the other side.

The core content, will then be used in a FAQ-style thread to help the transition to a cross-plaftorm forum.

 

I will start by listing common ones, such as shortcuts and location of menus (preferences...) location of files on the machine (fonts, preference files, presets, etc.)

This IMHO should be useful for those bringing help, or the ones being helped, or could figure in one's Resume

 

Feel free to add any platform-specific information you might run into.

    One can easily translate keyboard shortcuts, by replacing the following. There are a few exceptions that will be listed lower:

    ALT on a Pc = Option on a Mac On some keyboards (UK), the Option key is labeled with Alt.

    CTRL (Control) on Pc = Cmd (Command) on a Mac, the key has the following symbol: ⌘

    Right-click on a Pc = Right-click on a Mac, or Control+Click on machines without a mouse.

    Menu differences.

    They are not specific to Photoshop, most (Adobe) applications will store them in the same locations.

    Preferences (CMD+K) are found on the Photoshop menu on a Mac, at the bottom of the Edit menu on a PC, and the shortcut is (CTRL+K).

    On the same Photoshop menu on a Mac, one can find About Plug-ins... and About Photoshop, while they are located on the Help menu on a PC.

    Quit Photoshop (CMD+Q) is also on that Photoshop menu on a Mac, while Exit (CTRL+Q) can be found at the end of the File menu on a PC.

    Preferences location on the hard drive.

    but basically:

    The main preference file, is on both plaform  Adobe Photoshop CS5 Prefs.psp it is located, alongside most other preferences on:

    Mac location: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

    Windows XP: Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings 

    Windows 7 and Vista: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

    In  Bridge two locations asked for frequently are keywords, collections and preferences.  For Win7 location:

     

    Both can be found in C:/Users/user name/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/BridgeCS5/.  Confusion was apparent with this address until user finally found it and told me that appdata is a hidden file.

    Do Windows and Mac both have the same headings?

     

    For photoshop   -  File, Edit, Image, Layer, - - - ?

     

    For Bridge      -  File, Edit, Stacks, Label - - - - ?

    Mac programs have first the Apple menu, with the logo, where one can perform actions related to the machine/OS, like a restart, access the system preferences (the windows control panel) , then an application menu, where the entries from the "menu" post reside, plus options related on the application: hide it, hide others... then all the known menus.

    On a PC, the Control Panel is the equivalent of the System preferences, and it can be found on the Start menu (on the bottom of the screen, with the windows logo)

    Exceptions to the shortcuts translations.

    Switch to next/previous document is Control+Tab and Control+Shift+Tab on both platforms.

    Heads Up Display Color Picker on windows: Any painting tool + Shift + Alt + right-click and drag, on Mac:  Any painting tool + Control + Option + Command and drag (I think it is a matter of ergonomy)

    

    Delete Adobe Camera Raw preferences: PC:  Ctrl + Alt (on open) Mac:  Option + Shift (on open)

     

    The shortcut to disable snapping to grid, edges, etc. is Ctrl on both platforms.

    Bridge preferences / keywords sets location:

    PC (XP): Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Adobe/BridgeCS5/

    PC (win7-Vista): Users/user name/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/BridgeCS5/ 

    Mac: (your computer name)/ Library / App Support / Adobe / Bridge CS5 /

    For Windows systems, people who experience display problems are often directed to go download the latest display driver from the web site of the maker of their video card.  For example, someone experiencing OpenGL problems on a desktop system equipped with a nVidia display card might find that visiting the nVidia.com web site and getting the latest display driver for their card and version of Windows corrects the problems, as nVidia (and the other graphics card makers) release updates all the time.  On a laptop PC system usually one has to go to the manufacturer of the laptop for the drivers.

     

    What's the equivalent process for Apple systems?  Do users of Macs not have to deal with display drivers separately?  Do they have to go directly to Apple to get them?  Is there a difference between Apple desktops and Macbooks?

    Usually, on the Mac, display drivers are bundled inside Operating System updates. I don't know about third party cards, if it is the same.

    This is what I was going to comment on. 

     

    Windows - Video card drivers - go to manufacturors web site and look up your make and model then download latest driver.

     

    Apple - Apple has the drivers by default already installed in the OS software , just like the printer drivers.

     

    The only thing the users have to do is catch up on the OSX software update. Also by default that is set to check once a week,  If you opt out of auto updates you have to do it manually.

    Perhaps I missed it, but I could not find the Location of ACR on the preference file at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82893.html

     

    In the past I have been refering users to Program Files/COMMON Files/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS5/File Formats which gives you Camera Raw.8bi.  There is no reference to version.

     

    Do not know address for Mac.

    The Mac folder for Adobe Camera Raw is: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS5/File Formats/  (I listed it already on the ACR FAQ, but it will be useful here as well)

    Added the fact that CTRL is the shortcut on both platforms to disable snapping.

    Anyone has an addition before I create a document from this thread? (The document can still be edited afterwards, but I'd like to see it as complete as possible in its 1.0 version.)

    Not sure if mentioning the Application Frame could be useful.  Always on for a PC, defaults to on (in Ps CS6) for a Mac, but can be disabled through the Window - Application Frame menu entry.

    Might add location of programs running in background.  Can be a problem if Bridge set to Load at Startup.

     

    PC Open Task Manager (crtl + alt + delete) and click on Processes Tab

     

    MAC Hold down Ctrl + Shift keys??
