We are trying to upgarde from Frame Maker 6.0 to 10. Have any of you tried this? For years we have been using Frame Maker 6.0 and we some how need to get all our legacy source files working in Frame Maker 10 as well. Do you think this is a good idea? Please advice.
What makes you think there will be a problem?
I would expect FM10 to open FM6 binary files without issue.
Is there any chance you would need to re-open in 6 after making changes in 10?
I would save everything out of FM6 as MIF also, just as a contingency.
I've opened FrameMaker 6 files in FrameMaker 10. Backward compatibility seems to be 100%.
The UI in FM10 may come as a shock. To me it's full of what are either bugs or incomprehensible design choices.
Thanks for your feedback! Well I do not think I will need to reopne them in 6 after updating in 10. in the upgrade guide it is mentioned that it can be upgraded from FM 7.0 onwards. I also dowloaded the trial version and it seems that I cannot update the book and save, it gives an error of some sort.

If you have content in Non-Western-Languages like Czeck, Russian, Greek based on virtual fonts there are problems converting index markers, variables, cross-referenences, if these objects contains characters out of western range.
You've to correct these by hand
If you have content in Non-Western-Languages ...
I would expect that to be about the same challenge for FM7.2 to FM8 as for FM6 to FM10.
Going to FM8 or above you cross the relatively unmarked border at the Unicode frontier. You need to check your luggage for hidden text damage in transit.
Safe MIF return to FM7.2 or earlier LegacyLand, with text intact, may be difficult.
Well, OK, maybe I exaggerated. When I said backward compatibility seems to be 100%, I meant I encountered only the usual missing-font messages when opening documents and "contains no openable nongenerated files" messages when updating a newly imported book, the same errors I encountered when migrating from FM9 to FM10.
Personally I'd rather use FM 7.2 or 8 than 10. The new UI introduced in 9 is a mess and none of the new features added since 7.2 have been useful to me to date.
