SB CS3: Bits of audio removed from waveform

All,

While recording some .wav format voiceover tracks, I notice during playback some parts of the audio are totally missing, like someone highlighted random parts of the waveform and inserted 0.1 or 0.2 second of silence here and there. I'm using a very basic set of mic headphones from LabTec that plug into my VAIO laptop (not USB). The only reliable, albeit temporary, fix is restarting SB, but inevitably, the problem comes back after recording one or two .wav files. Dumping the cache has no effect.

Help would be much appreciated.
