The library site and the tech support from Sony said to use Adobe DE for the
library ebooks. I couldn't get .PDF books to work from the Reader Library
software from Sony. Initially I was trying to put 1 ePUB and 1 PDF on the
reader at the same time. I could only read the epub one. That is when I
first called Sony and they said I needed Adobe DE.
I think my problem all along was trying to put both .PDF and .EPUB books on the Reader at the same time or switching between formats. Plus talking to several tech support people at Sony who really didn't know what the problem was.
I keep experimenting to simplify the process.
Today I already had 2 .PDF books on my Reader. After updating Adobe DE recently to the latest version, it now opens when I download from my library. I left it open, plugged in my Reader, used Adobe DE to drag latest books onto my Reader, closed Adobe DE, and all the books were good on the Reader. Would probably work just as well with only the Reader Library software.
Will see what happens when I want to put some .EPUBs on after finishing these .PDFs.
Eight months on and the issue still remains - I had this problem and I seem to have figured out what was happening, at least for my PRS505 and my wife's 505... we had been sync'ing books to the SD memory. I tried sync'ing them to the reader memory instead and now I can read both formats with no protection error. If you have been storing your protected books to the SD memory, try the reader. Might work for you too.

Hello, ScoutTroup!
1. You download the books directly to Sony eReader Software. You do not need ADE.
2. Download the book to your eRead and NOT the SD Card you have inserted. You have authorization to download the book to your computer and your eReader, NOT an SD Card. The SD Card is causing the issue at hand. The SD Card is NOT authorized to accept the book, ONLY your eReader and your computer.
3. I have never had a problem when downloading directly to the eReader.
4. Happy reading and this, hopefully, has solved all your problems!
5. KISKIS!
Jumping back in to this discussion - I recently sent a note to sony support as they should be addressing this (regardless if it is an adobe or oblivion quirk)
This is the response I received:
Thank you for contacting sony support
while we have been working hard to make the Digital Reader the best product on the market, there is always room for improvement. We look forward to getting this type of customer response on our designs and will do our best to incorporate as many as possible in the futures. To submit such requests we have established a dedicated email address. Please send all such comments to: feedback@ebookstore.sony.com
So to everyone who continues to have this issue please register your feedback with Sony too!!
Hi,
I only download protected Epub books now. The problem occurs if you download protected PDFs and Epubs together. Most of the books in my library are in Epub format now so it's not much of a concern. If you accidentally load a protected PDF, delete all the books and ONLY load Epubs.

Just an update - I still have my PRS505 and do exactly as bogeycorgi suggests. Very rarely do I download an ADOBE PDF from the public library (and when I do, I return my EPUBs first).
As an aside, I recently purchased a KOBO for my husband and he is able to download both onto his reader with no issues..
Also... our library (BC Libraries to Go) now carries an OPENPDF fomat For testing purposes I borrowed one and transferred it to my reader - this format does not cause the same issues as the ADOBEPDF
Good luck and happy reading..
