Got it live on the BBC.
New York off to an easy 9 point start, but there's far too many breaks and action replays. We want action!
I went to bed at half time… Well it was well after 1 am.
John_L: I love American Football--don't get me wrong--but seriously?? You call 45 seconds between plays "playing action"??? It can be interesting for fans, but playing action in my book does not include seeing Tom Brady sitting on the bench spitting, Bilichek looking perturbed on the sidelines, 3 replays of the previous play, the offense still in a huddle, all while the game clock is ticking down or not while we WAIT for another snap! The Super Bowl had 58 commercials. Do you know how many commercials there are during either half of a soccer match on TV? Zero. How many timeouts each half, per team? Zero. How many game seconds are spent with the cameras on the coaches? Probably 40 seconds total. My point is, there are 90 minutes of actual action ("playing action") in a soccer match, but only about 23 minutes in a typical American Football game. I know because I once watched a game using a chess clock to let the seconds of genuine playing action accumulate so I could count the minutes at the end. And when you reply, I'm guessing
you (IOPHFI_INH) probably can do so without the obligatory kneejerk American anti-soccer dig so common amongst those 36 and older who don't care for the game. I don't care for curling or car racing, and so what? --to each his own. The relative merits of Football vs. American Football is not the point of this discussion so much as BigJohnD's comment, "there's far too many breaks and action replays. We want action!". I love both sports, but only 15.33% playing action over 2.5 hours is why I prefer good soccer matches over good NFL games.
My point, sir, is that there is 15:00 on the clock for each quarter, and the game isn't over until all 4 quarters are played: 60 minutes of playing time per game. I didn't say it was "constant playing." ;-)
And no. I have no reason to dis soccer! I actually love the game, I just don't really follow it...
Anyhow, for me, those few short moments of some of the best athleticism you will ever see in those 2.5 hrs. is worth it. I LOVE THE NFL!
It Apples and Oranges anyhow, different rules, different strategies... just different games... <shrug>
I prefer play to be more or less continuous and uninterrupted. So an hour's playing time takes well over twice that.
As there were no commercials here on the BBC, the local commentators were just filling space, and struggling to do so. So any impetus was lost.
I expect it's a great occasion and very different if you're sitting in the stadium with 50,000+ other people and it all happening live on the "stage" in front of you.
And European Football fans like to go to the stadium, and beat each other up! Even KILLING each other, sometimes! What fun! ;-)
How can an hour's playing time take "well over twice that?" In real time with no interruptions, an hour is an hour... Or am I missing something?

Kick off = 11:30 pm UK time.
Half time after 30 mins play = 12:45 am.
So 30 mins playing time takes over an hour.
That's the way it's played…
