New features for OnLocation

OnLocation is good for certain tasks but it would be even better if  Adobe could turn it into a multicamera capture application.

I find myself that capturing only one camera very seldom.

So I would like to se if users of this program will agree with me and maybe we could make this program useful for something more then just one camera capture.

And so here we go.

I would like to see this program capable of capturing 4 cameras basically it would be more like a software switcher.

Here is the link to the soft that does it - check it out.

It is capable of capturing via FireWire and Decklink SDI capture card.

OnLocation is capable of capturing FireWire and only one camera at a time, all what it needs is SDI capability and mylticam switcher with transitions and titles.

 

So instead of paying extra money to some third party I would rather pay it to Adobe and have the software with same interface and in one package. It would make my life so much easier when capturing multi cam during a live concerts and such events. I would have no need of renting expensive Tricaster, would not need any additional switches, or third party software, everything would be from Adobe suit.

 

What do you guys think?

 

I have made feature request couple of years ago about this, but did not have a sample to show, and I will do it again, but now I hope Adobe looks at it and makes changes in their soft, so that it will be capable to do something similar or much better.

    Guess what Adobe does not have OnLocation in the list for feature request.

    With the onslaught of tapeless technology, I bet it won't be long before OL is dropped by Adobe.

     

    Shame.  I like it, although you are right in identifying that there's considerable room for improvement.  Why CS5 needs Raid-0, when CS4 was happy with an internal 7,200 HDD, I'll never know.  I now have to lug around a b***dy great Lacie Raid that weights move than a mobile home.

    Well even if it is a tapeless technology it will not replace a live recording, live Internet streaming and perhaps broadcast.I am using tapeless system for over a year now, but I do a lot of a live recordings as well.

    A lot of the Internet websites offer these days a live streaming capability and they have their own software (similar to mentioned below). But that is for the beginners and they don't offer professional tools in the software. Adobe however has everything in OnLocations all what it needs is to add a switch and transitions plus few other things, and it is done. Should not be that difficult.

    I think if they drop this app they will miss a lot. I know a lot of a small studios and freelancers that use some kind of a soft or with similar capabilities to lave capture, how ever their main post production tool is Adobe CS suits.

    I really like OL and think it has great potential.

     

    I would really love to see a portable version of OnLocation. Not just for a Laptop or MacBook but for SmartPhones and Tablets as well. It doesn't have to have all the features the full version has. Just the timestamp and some kind of additional information to describe the take (MetaData) that we could bring then into the full version for further tweak would be enough.

    Laptops aren't always the best option to carry around on set espacially if they make a lot of noise so a android and ios version would be a blessing

     

    and please make OL a 64bit application. I found that it is very slowly when I try to relink media with the timestamps.

    First, thanks for that link to AVTake. I will be buying it since I do have a Blackmagic card. OL has great potential but Adobe has turned it into an all but useless cardreader app. Not many of the newer cams use Firewire anymore so OL is generations behind in what it can't do. I don't know why they even included it in CS 5 or 5.5. It's uselessness is probably why you have so few responses to this thread.

    Just found this conversation as I am exploring OL. I agree that using FW to control a camera with OL seems out of the range of what I'm looking for, more of something I would expect on a large scale movie, but I would like to see the functionality of OL for adding metadata built directly into Pr, as it is in FCP. Adobe has Bridge (mainly for stills it seems, and artwork), and OL for video, but Ol functionality seems sort of a kludge instead of a well integrated product. I am willing to be proved wrong here, as I have not spent a great deal of time with OL, but have a multicamera on location shoot coming up. I'll be seeing how it all plays. And yes, if this product isn't 64 bit, it ought to be. It did seems terribly slow when I tried to import a bunch of clips. The old FCP, as some of you may know, seemed to handle the issue of metadata quite well.

     

    When I'm on location, I don't have a lot of time to be looking at the computer rather than coordinating the takes. I need this metadata functionality in the product because if not, I'm stuck using different products for different cameras. (AVCHD vs. MXF vs MOV etc). Better to just dump it all to a portable HD with RAID1, then tag it later in the studio, with less pressure and more time to really properly tag it.

    Well maybe it is outdated for fire wire and that is OK. And I am not using that any way. But I am seeing a lot of third party software that have the same functionality but taken to the next level, and as far as input goes they using anything USB, SDI, Compaset you name it. And the main thing is that it works just fine.

    So why not to take this useless program and upgrade it to next useful level. I would be great deal to able to capture HD via SDI inputs and mix it live.

    OnLocation isn't a switcher.  It's basically a field recorder.  And it does that job pretty well.

    I wish that OL would become a real field recorder like a ninja.pix 220... I wish it could read the signal from the hdmi of my af100  then it would be a powerhouse app.
