illustrator cs5 drop shadow issue

Hey all,

 

when using drop shadows in illustrator, they're coming in as a crisp vector object,  with no blur/feathering, regardless of the settings in the drop shadow panel.  Also, when opening .ai files in which I know drop shadows have been applied,  they're opening up in AI as vector shapes as well.

 

Any ideas? Thanks!
