how can I automatically change text in headers?

I am working in a dictionary center. As usual in such fields, we use character style as variables for headers. However, I need to remove certain items from the headers, namely dots (e.g. I want the lemma de-ci-si-on to appear as 'decision'). Is there any script to achieve this?

 

Alternatively, I tried for another solution:  to automatically find/replace the dots using the character style, but, I see that no search into variables is possible.

 

Do you think of any solution? I appreciate it much and thank you in advance.

    It's not possible natively in InDesign. Check out PowerHeaders from in-tools.com you can accomplish the Grep Proccessor feature in PowerHeaders.
