CS5 - Adding Notes

I just recently found out about the "Adding Notes" feature in CS5.  I was able to add notes.  However, when I saved the photo as a jpeg, and then re-opened it - the notes were not there.

 

Am I doing something wrong or will notes only re-appear when the photo file is saved to a psd or tif?

    Apparently Notes cannot be saved in the Metadata of a JPEG file, though I hadn't noticed that before.

     

    See that the Notes setting has a warning icon by it in the Save As dialog when trying to save the JPEG.  That's Photoshop telling you it can't perform that function for the given file type.

    Thanks Nobel.  That stinks.  I've got some great photos and have been asked how I processed them.  Since I save most 95% of my photos out of photoshop as jpeg's, I can't refer back to my processing workflow.  Is there another way in photoshop or any other technique that would allow me to retrieve my workflow or notes?  I've thought about taking a screen shot and saving that, but that just adds to file space.

    Are you on a Mac?

     

    You can do: Command + i  and place your comments in the "Spotlight Comments" window.

    …which should really be called "Finder Comments" window, as it used to be.  Spotlight is not needed to add or to read such comments.  The Comments window is available even when Spotlight is disabled permanently.

    Hey - that's a good idea. I would have to write down the workflow and then type it into the spolight comments.  I hit command + I in photoshop and it just inverted the picture.  I see that I must add the comments via Finder on the iMac (which I do have).

     

    I wish there was an easier way via photoshop to do the note thing for jpeg.

    Yes, via the Finder. Glad you figured that out.

    Thanks everyone for the input.  I suppose that putting comment in via the finder is the only solution, although it is very time consuming - having to scribe handwritten notes into the finder. 

     

    If there is a better solution, I'd like to know that also.

    R Kelly ... AWESOME ... that works.  At least I can type in my workflow by reading it off my layers pallet. Thanks ....  It would nice if I could electronically pick up the history .... or ... the layers palette, but teh File>File Info>  would work.

    Be careful with that one. If you use "Save for Web & Devices" to create your JPEG, be certain to check "Include XMP" otherwise those comments will get erased when you save your JPEGs.

    You can somewhat save your steps by turning on the History Log under Photoshop>Preferences>General.

    Then if you choose metadata, the history is listed under File>Info>History.

    Try this on for size:

     

    1.  In Photoshop, click Edit - Preferences - General.

    2.  Check the box for [  ] History Log.

    3.  Choose the Save Log Items To: (  ) Metadata radio button.

    4.  Set Edit Log Items to Detailed.

     

    Voila, all your editing steps are now saved in the metadata of the file.

    Great stuff - exactaly what I was looking for.  Now ... I am a step behind you all.  Noel - a follow-up question:  1) will the editing steps be saved if I save the file to a jpeg; 2) when I bring up the saved photo file, where do I go (in photoshop) to see the steps saved in the metadata

    Yes, JPEG images will carry the history log information in the metadata.

     

    Be mindful of the side effects of storing the editing history in the metadata, though... It's not hard to imagine accumulating many kbytes of metadata because of having done a lot of editing, then having all that extra metadata cause an image that's intended to be small for web display to be much a larger file on disk than you want it to be.

    Thanks for the heads up ... I really want to use this feature for competition photos ...or ... what I just thought, I could just save the competition prints as a psd.  Hum
