upgraded to Filemaker Pro 10 and now no matter where I uncheck the box marked "View Adobe PDF results" whenever I open the database again it resets and defaults to showing me the PDFs. This was never a problem in Filemaker 5 - any suggestions on how to permanently turn this off?

You need to specifically change the preference for the Adobe PDF printer. To do so, open the Devices and Printers, right-click on the "AdobePDF" printer, select "Printing Preferences" and deselect "View Adobe PDF Results". Did that do it?
