Adobe Community: How long should a search to Include Non-Indexed Files take??

Depends on what the screen is showing and what the state of your files are.

This option indexes all the files in your search path. So if you have a lot of files it can take a long time. This option re-indexes everything even if indexed before.

If could also be hung up, 12 hrs seems like a very long time.

The screen should say something like "indexing xxx" as it moves through the folders.

HI Curt,

Thanks...I killed it and will try again...It wasn't giving me any names on the bottom of what it was indexing, only the folders it was going through...

So, I will try later!

I have to say, that on a box at work stuck with CS3, that I use the system search function for instant results (in case of filename searches), then open the file in Ps, rather than the slow search in Bridge.

I'll have to check if newer versions are faster.

Babs, you mention on a server. are you searching through the network? how many images are being indexed?

Hello....

Well, I have to say that Bridge CS5 is much faster than CS3...but regardless, there are probably 100's of thousands of files on that server that is on a network. Hence the insane index time!

While Bridge will work on a network it was not made to function that way.

Have seen too many problems with people on networks. Sometimes it is just that the person has the folders in a conflicting folder address.

Long searches or waits for a function can also be Bridge searching for something it can not find. Like a network printer that is offrline, or a computer that is offline.

Even though these are not needed for the search Bridge keeps polling everything to see who is present. If it does not answer it searches everything to find it and keeps pinging it.

Not a network person, just thoughts from what I have read.

I just did a search of at least 14,000 files and it took less than 1 minute.

Win7 CS5

Hi Curt....hmmmm..

But, did you check off the , Check Non-Indexed Files option?

That's what's killing me........If that's off the search is faste, but I don't always get everything, so I have to have it look at non-indexed files and this is where it is taking forever...

No, did not Check the Non-Indexed File option.

Disregard what is says from my experience.

If checked it will index ALL files whether it has been indexed before or not.

If you have a lot of files this can take a very long time.

Do it once to index everything when not using compter like at night. Then uncheck the option when searching again as now everything is indexed..

Files are also indexed by opening a folder, if you wait for spinning arrow to stop.

I just did a search of at least 14,000 files and it took less than 1 minute.

Hence my statement that Bridge (despite being a fabulous app for ingestion and sorting etc, all the work needed before the files are ready for distribution or publishing) it is lousy for use as a DAM (Digital Asset Management).

It is also not designed for use over a network as you already clearly stated.

To spoil your party a bit more, I just timed my search in my DAM application Canto Cumulus Single user edition. Having almost 60.000 keepers from the last 17 years in my digital archive a search took almost 2 seconds....

Yes it is not fair because Bridge comes (somewhat) for free with PS or other CS applications and Cumulus single user is around 300 $ I believe.

But there are some cheaper DAM applications. All those DAM apps are pretty lousy in the work Bridge is very good at. It is just trying to get the right tools for the job
