OT (Slightly): Printing fluorescent garments in CMYK

Apart from using a spot colour what is the best practise?  Where can I go to find this sort if thing?  Google just thinks you're trying to print with fluorescent inks on an actual garment, I'm looking for tips on how to print an image of one.

    Apart from using a spot color, there are no alternatives

     

    A lot of spot colors fall outside the printable CMYK gamut, and fluorescent inks doubly do so! Metallic inks such as "gold" and "silver" also cannot be approximated with CMYK.

    Well I realise that but I was hoping someone somewhere has jotted down their experience in trying to do it without!

    You cheat with the lighting. Retouch the photo in photoshop, darken and/or add the opposite colour to your fluorescent into your background, obviously you can only go so far where there are skin tones but its surprising how much they can take.

    Interesting tip, thank you Glenn, exactly what I was looking for.  Would another way of saying it be to increase the contrast between the fluorescent garment and the surroundings?

    No not really increasing the contrast. You are creating an optical illusion. A lot of how your brain perceives colour is by comparison, and little to do with numbers read by spectrophotometers in isolated areas.
