Five to ten times a day InDesign stops responding. It's usually when I open a document and then try to click into a text box. I get the beachball and it never recovers. When force quitting it says that Indesign is not responding. I have to restart my computer at that point and it works for a while then starts to do this again. I have neither the time nor patience to deal with this, it's making it very difficult to get work done.
I've found a few threads that are similar and tried the fixes recommended to no avail (the main one being getting rid of a certain asian text plugin). But I have yet to find a thread that shares my exact problem.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Per John Hawkinson:
When it hangs, run Activity Monitor, select InDesign, and run Sample Process. You'll get a report. Upload it to http://pastebin.com/.
Then, chose View > Send Signal: Abort (SIGABRT). You'll get a crash report. Upload that to http://pastebin.com, too.
Post both URLs here, we'll tell you why it hung.

Thanks again for any help offered!
Create one as a test. If ID works when logged in with this new account, then there is something wrong with you original account, most likely permissions. Your options are to go through the old account and find what's worng or use the new account a n rebuild you preferences as you need them.
I wonder why John never popped in...
Sorry, I missed this on the first go 'round, and this has been a fairly busy week for me. Finally catching up.
As Peter suggested, this is definitely font related. Try Larry's suggestion because it is easier, but I doubt it will help.
It appears that there is a problem of some sort with some font that you have. The hang takes place in the AdobeCoolType module, but we don't know what it is doing (or trying to do). Merely that it is stuck.
The general answer is to remove all your non-system fonts and confirm the problem is gone, and then add the fonts in by halves until you find which one is triggering the problem.
You might be able to narrow this down more easily if it only happens with certain InDesign documents (that contain certain fonts).
Are either of you well-versed in the Terminal? I could give you some recipes to try if none of the above work, bt it'll be a pain in the neck.
Oh, actually -- what happens if you package the document up (including fonts) and try it on another machine? Or is that not feasible (either because you cannot get it open for long neough to package it, or bceause you don't have another machine)?
The FontDoctor report said "These Bitmap Font files appear to be incompatible with this OS. "
Does this mean they are corrupt? I've been using them for years with no problem.
The Font Doctor manual says:
Bitmap Fonts
Mac OS X does not support older bitmap fonts (usually from System 6 and earlier). FontDoctor, however, does
support these older font formats and can update them for you.
This matches my recollection. Typically an old font would ship with a bitmap ("screen font") and then a postscript font. Under System 6 (wow, brings back memories), MacOS would use the screen font on the scren and the postscript to print. But starting with System 7, the bitmap font was ignored and the postscript (Type 1) font would be used on the screen and in print as well.
So as long as you have the Type 1 font, the bitmap should be superfluous.
Whether the bitmaps are causing the problem or not is a seperate question... they shouldn't be, but who knows?
