I have been using the BETA version for some time and I did not see this problem until I installed the released version of LR 4
The problem is that I cannot edit the images using my plugis from NIK software. ( I bought the complete collection about 3 months ago)
In the Beta version it was still OK.
Only the export plugin works (HDR from nik)
Also when I try to install the plugin again it only shows that it is compatible with LR3.
I just bought LR4 (since it worked in the BETA version)
Hope they will fix this soon. I also sent a message to NIK software.
anyone else has seen this problem
regards
Andre
I use MAC OS-X 10.7.3
NIK plugins are the latest versions available.
Hi,
Someone reported the following error message when launching Color Efex from LR 4 : "unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected got nil)". Obviously a bad pointer passed to some function. Not sure whether he is using the latest vesion of Color Efex (currently checking this). No problem when running Color Efex from LR 3.6 on the same system.
Hi Samoreen,
I do not get any error. There is simply nothing happening when I choose to edit my image in one of the plgun-ins. No errors, so basicically as if I had not clicked anthing. I tried trough the pull down menus and the right click. No difference.
To verify:
I went back to the BETA of lightroom 4 and then it all works fine.
The re-installed the new " final" release of LR 4 and plugins do not work anymore.
I also tried re-installing and un-installing the plugins but no solution.
The problem is in the lightroom 4 release. The version I have is still a DEMO version since I have not recevied the bought version.
No reply from NIK either.
I get the same "unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected got nil)" message when trying to "edit in".
No matter if it's Nik Software plugins (the latest versions) or DXO Filmpack (the latest version).
All of these plugins worked well in LR4 beta.
Windows 7 64-bit.
Nik just updated their plug-in for LR4: http://www.niksoftware.com/downloads/usa/entry.php?view=software
Still same problem as everyone else. I uninstalled all of NIK software, downloaded the latest updates on all software, reinstalled..............same error.
I sent a request to NIK tech support via email but have not received an answer as yet.
Will post if they respond with a solution.
Anyone contact Adobe with reference to this? I heard they worked with the Beta edition but I just went from LR3 to LR4.
The updates from the NIK software did not solve the problem. (given the fact that they updated the files shows that they are aware of the problem)
When installing the updates I see now that both applications are recognised which did not happen before. (LR3 + LR4)
Nevertheless the result is the same. It simply does not start the plugin.
What I think is strange is that the BETA version of LR4 working fine.
Something must have happened along the way to the final version.
Using MAC PRO Lion 10.7.3
Hope they fix it soon.
regards
Andre

Oh well, I will try to d/l trial of Photoshop then and see if it helps.
Same problem here. Windows 7 64-bit SP1, I have all Nik plugins but none is working, I get the same message "unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected got nil)". I think it is not a Nik problem though, as any other external editor I had configured (Capture NX2 2.3.1 and FastStone MaxView 2.5) gives me the same error. More probably an Adobe problem, hope it gets solved quickly :-)
Nik plugins (Color Efex 3 and Silver Efex 2), OnOne plugins (PerfectSuite) and Topaz Labs plugins (Full suite) all exhibit the same error for me, as well on Windows 7 SP1, 64Bit. Error messaging is -- "unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected got nil)".
No Photoshop versions installed, only LR4 at this point.
I just got off phone with NIK tech support. They logged on to my computer and reinstalled everything again. They said it appears that it is an Adobe issue and it seems to be the case. I don't know what all he did, but he was all over my computer and checked installation, etc. Was very thorough.
Windows 7 64-bit SP1 machine here.
Yesterday, as most of you here, I had this error message with any
external editor, and I posted a message in this forum. At night, before
going to bed, I installed an evaluation version of Photoshop Elements
10. This morning I opened Lightroom and, TADA!, plugins work fine! So
definitely it is an Adobe problem, LR must be missing some piece of
software that PSE has; note that I did not open PSE at all after
installing it yesterday night, so it has added the missing part during
installation.
Hope this helps Adobe engineers to solve the problem.

Fixed!
under Mac OS X 10.7.3
had no other adobe product installed then Lightroom;
after upgrade to LR4 Nik Plugins did not work anymore.
then I installed a Demo Adobe CS5
now the Nik Plugins work again;
I think during the installation of CS5 the Plugin-definition area is touched and so repaird
it's not a NIK Software but an Adobe Problem
cheers

What you did just changed the memory layout for Lightroom and other programs. See this thread. The bug is obviously in Lightroom in any case but this kind of dangling pointer problem may or may not cause a crash depending on the random value stored in the pointer. Kind of a lottery. I don't think that PSE has anything to do with the problem.

Thank for your reply Samoreen. The interested thing is that changes
introduced by the installation of PSE only persist as long as you keep
it on your machine. I tried uninstalling PSE and the error in LR is back
again.

This is consistent with what I explained. Installing PSE changes the way the memory is organized because some additional programs are loaded in memory upon startup. So LR is loaded at another address which may or may not have consequences on the way the bug manifests itself.
This is just my opinion as a former developer. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe installing PSE or PS changes something else in the Common Files | Adobe folder (a missing file as you suggested) but I doubt. In that case, the problem would hit every user.
I just got off the phone with Adobe support. They said it is an issue with NIK and not LR4. I suggested they read the forums out there
and see what the public is seeing on this issue. They, again, said it is not LR4 and that if I wanted to call tech support with NIK and then
call Adobe support, they would have a conversation with them!
I give up!
I used LR 3 and upgraded to LR4 on Widows 7 (64 bits). I had no issue launching Nick soft (I did not update to their yesterday's editions. I have the previous ones). I was affraid that this stops running when I delete LR3. But I did it anyway (for the fun), and it does work with no problem.
