Straight answer: No.

You can certainly place all the PDFs into 1024x768 InDesign pages but the result is going to be less than stellar.

You might just as well distribute the PDF.

Nope, you need several indesign files.

If you only need the articles to sit next to each other (instead of going

down), you can work with one indesign file and choose "horizontal swipe

only"

This has some other disadvantages (only one page in the auto-toc).

But I think there are scripts to import a PDF file into one indesign file

page by page.

You can upload the PDF as HTMLResources.zip. and show it inside the webview or internal browser.

During the beta process I specifically asked Adobe to include sometype of PDF functionality into their publishing system. All my documents are PDFs and you really can't use the Digital Publishing system if your original material is PDF. Bob keeps giving the line that you should just distribute the PDF, but I don't know why this is so difficult for Adobe to figure out. Isn't PDF an Adobe format?

You CAN import a huge PDF into inDesign using the MulitPage PDF importer script (See: http://www.indesignsecrets.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-i ndesign.php) But since the pages are usually 8.5x11" nothing displays correctly in the iPad format. Aquafadas.com can take 8.5x11 indesign pages and jam them through Photoshop to create pages that fit perfectly on the iPad. But their system has other problems.

Right now, I know of no really good solution.

For starters, I don’t work for Adobe. Secondly, PDF is an open file specification and its intent is as a final destination, not to be altered.

Like you said, there is simply no really good solution to that.

You need to manually adjust the layout to fit the iPad screen. And the file

format is completly different (folio vs. PDF) because of their different

output intends.

In your workflow is something wrong if your "original format" is PDF. Like

bob said, PDF is no original format, it's only the last format at the end

of a workflow, somehow.

If your pdfs were created using indesign and you can get your hands on to

that, you have a good solution at your hand.

My PDFs are entirely created by software. Data is charted and pulled from several different databases, combined, formatted and outputted as a report in PDF. It would cost us over $100,000 in programming expense to rewite our code. DPS should be able to take-in PDFs and format them for display on the iPad. Like I said, Aquafadas can do it, but Adobe can't.

As it stands, right now...I know of no perfect solution to get a PDF into DPS.

PDFs really were intended to be final stage, archive snapshots, specific to a given output (e.g. tabloid sized paper).

That's the "formatted & outputted" part of the process you described.

It is very probable that the software you use creates an intermediate file of "charted and pulled" data, probably in XML or something similar, which it uses as input for the format/output stage, and it is those intermediate/temporary files that will probably be the best inputs for InDesign/DPS....

If you just need non-interactive pdfs to be wrapped into a an ipad app the DPS solution is nonsense. There is a growing number of flip-book type solutions which offer automated conversion of pdfs into apps.

Hi,

If you want to go this route, you could consider the following things:

Write a script (or do it manual) that does the following tasks:
- Place 2 pages of you PDF in a 'horizontal' article (as a spread) - resulting in 1 page
- Create an article with 2 pages of your PDF in a 'vertical article) - resulting in 2 pages
- Save this as seperate _v / _h files
Create a new folio with default image format 'PDF'
Import the _v / _h files and set 'Horizontal Swipe only' for the Vertical Article.

This will give you a '2 up' view in the Horizontal view (Spread) and a '1 up' view (and swipe to the right for next page) in the Vertical view

Is there a demo version?

Can you pinch and zoom too?

Does it convert PDFs to jpgs using Photoshop or do I just need inDesign?

We just added a demo version on the web site.

Pinch and zoom is possible if you create your articles in pdf mode.

Up till now, iPad only. Hope Adobe will give this possibility soon on Android devices too.

You just need InDesign, no use of Photoshop.
