Do NOT install Flash Player 11 if you're using Captivate 4

Oct 16, 2011 6:34 PM

Hi everyone.  We just installed the new Flash Player 11 update this morning and discovered that it prevents Captivate 4 from publishing at all.

This error message is shown:

FlashPlayer11_in_Cp4_error.png

The message seems to indicate the issue has something to do with widgets. But in fact it's caused by Flash Player 11.

If you are using Cp4, do not install the Flash Player 11 update.  If you've already done so, you need to uninstall the Flash Player 11 ActiveX control and reinstall one of the Flash Player 10x versions (10.3 is the highest).

I hope Adobe picks this up very quickly and issues a fix for Captivate 4 users, otherwise they are going to get deluged with complaints very soon.

Well spotted Rod and thanks a million for reporting it on the Forum.

What I find very odd is that Flash Player is an Adobe product - and so find it hard to understand why it would be released before full and complete testing was undertaken to ensure it was compatible with all other Adobe products.

This is not the first time a release of Flash Player has had a negative effect on Captivate.

We have upgraded to Flash Player 11.102.1.63 after pressure from our Security Policy Team. We now have this issue with a couple of users using Captivate 4, but are unable to revert to a perceived more vulnerable version. Any idea of a timescale for a fix from Abobe.

RodWard, thanks for that, hopefully you are right. Two disgruntled users are two too many.

    Hi Rod,

Just an observation from my side.

It was back in Oct 2011 that you raised the issue about Flash Player 11 and Captivate v4 - and here we are 5 months later and Adobe still have not fixed the problem. If I kept my customers waiting 5 months to put something right, I would have lost my job years ago.

What I also find strange is that Adobe create Flash Player and Captivate - so I dont understand why there should be any issues in the first place. Dont Adobe test these things before they release them ?

If Adobe are monitoring this forum they might take note!!

And if Adobe are monitoring this forum would they like to let me download the patch for testing ? I'm quite happy to put it through our test environment prior to unleashing it on the users affected. therefore, no liability on Adobe's behalf. I am getting angry e-mails on a daily basis from the users as they use Captivate for a large portion of their work, and currently feel virtually unemployed.

Rod, We know why Adobe are "dragging their feet".

When there is a new version available, Adobe adopt the attitude of closing the "support" door on the older version knowing that for many of their "customers", the only way around the problems is to pay and upgrade to the newer version.

    Rod,

Whilst Adobe drag their feet or don’t move them at all, would it possible to make the patch available to me for testing.

    Gary.

So, it looks like Adobe have decided not to bother then

Anyone got a suggestion on how I might add a printable certificate of completion to a Cp4 project without using a widget?

I rest my case in regards Adobe just dont care about customers who have a problem / issue with an older version.

If Adobe do respond it will almost certainly be along the lines...."when you upgrade (at a cost !!!) to the latest version you will find we have fixed the problem you are having in the older version"....

    Hi there,

You can download a file to fix this issue in Adobe Captivate 4 from here - https://acrobat.com/#d=75WgKXP98aw9GX0nWPiS3w

    Instructions –

    1. Close Adobe Captivate 4 if it is running.
    2. Download the file and extract the file to a known location on your computer.
    3. Go to the Adobe Captivate 4 program directory.
    4. Rename the file “AdobeCaptivate.exe” to “AdobeCaptivate_old.exe”.
    5. Copy the extracted “AdobeCaptivate.exe” from step 2 to the Captivate program directory.

Launch Adobe Captivate and this issue will be corrected.

The same has been posted here as well - http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2012/04/adobe-captivate-4-and-flash-p layer-11-issue.html

Thank you Ashish - I take it all back

The fix does indeed appear to work on initial testing.

My only comment is...It has taken Adobe 6 months to rectify this issue.

An issue which is a conflict between two Adobe products...FlashPlayer and Captivate.

There should never have been any conflict in the first place.
