I have watched the video in the link above and it DOES NOT work. Spanning a heading across columns simply does not work in my CS5.5 or my older CS5. There must be some serious detail missing in the explanation in the video. I have tried again and again, NADA, does not work.

I tried to do what the instruction video showed, but I cannot make it work. Sorry, but cannot explain more than what that video showed.

I simply imported some text and tried exactly what the video told me to, but alas - it did not work.

The other response I got was about single multi columns and multiple single columns, but what on earth is the difference in meaning between those to phrases?

Having been a teacher of the English language for 36 years does not seem to help me to understand the difference there.

Single multi column text frames =  One text frame that has been configured to have more than one column in it.

Multiple single column text frames = More than one individual text frame on a page.

For me it worked, but not very well. My text has a footnote in the text I want to split, so the footnote text now is in the splitted text, not at the bottom of page.

I tried to get the same result using a table, but it is not possible to insert footnotes in a table.

Finally, I created a frame (anchored as inline graphic) for the text on the left column; however, in this case the wrapping does not work well (the first line of the right text is still over the frame, even if I set an offset. So I hat also to change the left indent for the text which comes on the right...

It is sad tha InDesign does not support this kind of things, which are very often necessary in scientific books.
