Often, one is looking for SFX (Sound Effects) files, or music files for use in their videos. This is a list of some possible sources. Some of these are free, while some are for sale. While there are many more, and they will be added, as I come across them, these URL's would be a good place to start. I have used several of these, both free ones, and commercial ones, but cannot comment directly on all of these, as many were added by others.

The have a handful of free music tracks and sounds, but a very large selection of good music that can be licensed fairly affordably.

Appreciate you posting this. I'm working on a small video project and was scrounging for some royalty free music on my computer. I found some appropriate pieces at incompetech.com. An odd choice for a domain name, but they have some decent music there.

http://www.opuzz.com/ is not a new player and has a large resource with over 300 CDs. Definitely worth investing your time in searching for music in larger libraries as it offers you a better chance of finding something that fits your need.

You may want to watch out for people like Mark, Bill, who have only posted a few times -- and every post includes a link to the same web site.

Often these are not true recommendations. They're essentially spammers, out to pollute the boards.

I recommend you only trust recommendations from people who regularly contribute to or ask questions on the forum.

We have over 100,000 sound effects in our arsenal and can create custom libraries. And sure, I may be bringing these particular libraries to your attention because I work with PSE and BWFX, but I'm also a feature film sound editor/mixer and use them every single day at my studio. (Not a spammer, as the previous post might suggest). They're an essential tool for any sound OR video editor.

Here is a link from Matt Peterson:

we make good use of www.jamendo.com . The music has various terms but most is Creative Commons, meaning that as long as you credit the creator, you're good to go.

Hi everyone,

Checked most links given above. Most of them look ancient.

Have been using those mentioned in post #9 (by Quinnster) for years, but recently discovered the greatest one:

This web-site became my favorite one, it's modern with good selection of music and authors. It helped me with my first project and I was fascinated when I was able to get appropriate music for my presentation background in several clicks!

As this is an on-going list, I greatly appreciate your contribution. I have seen references to that site elsewhere.

As I use some of the sources, in the original article (SmartSound mostly), I have not checked each link, to every site. Some might not be available any more, and if you find some that were, but are no longer, I will remove those.
