What kind of computer should I buy to adequately run PE 9 or 10? I have a laptop that does not quite make it (it is 2.4 ghz). I need at least 2.8, according to the box. Now my videos freeze when I try to edit. It worked fine for a while, but now I just cannot use it. I am looking at desktops. Few have 2.8 or better, but there are many quads, duals, and turbos around. What is optimal? I originally bought my laptop mostly for video editing. I don't want to make the same kind of mistake again!
Welcome to the forum.
Ideally, one needs at least an i7 CPU for the very common H.264 material, such as AVCHD.
Ideally, one needs at least two, and three is better, physical HDD's, at least SATA II, and 7200 RPM.
Depending on the OS, 12 - 16GB of RAM (for a 64-bit OS), will work well.
The video card/chip is less important, BUT having constant video drivers, such as from nVidia, or ATI/AMD is VERY important.
That limits one, regarding laptops, as about only two suppliers have such machines, ADK and Sager.
With a desktop, things are easier.

I appreciate all of your help, but your information is way beyond my meager powers of understanding. I have been a very amateur video editor, and will continue to be. I can't afford even the cheapest of outfits you are recommending. I was hoping someone could help me with my original question...I only use PE elements, nothing more sophisticated. I edit AVCHD, but it is strictly home computing. I would like to know if I can find a consumer computer (HP, DELL, ASUS, etc.) that will handle what I do comfortably. Thanks.
I think that HP has a few laptops, that have two internal HDD's, so they might be an option.
With AVCHD material, I would definitely go with an i7 CPU, and if you go with a 64-bit version of Win7, at least 12GB of RAM.
The graphics chip would be best, if it is an nVidia, or ATI/AMD.
Good luck,
Hunt
OK, a desktop will be much easier to spec. out. Sorry that I was confused, as I thought we were talkiing a laptop here.
Still, same general specs.:
