Framemaker user, new to CS5: Looking for Framemaker function equivalents in InCopy CS5

Mar 29, 2012 3:20 PM

I've tried figuring this out a number of ways, but either I don't know what the best search terms are, or I'm just plumb out of luck. Looking to reproduce two FrameMaker functionalities

(1) Variables: In FrameMaker I used variables for company-specific proper nouns (product names, document titles, etc.) Whenever the product name changed, I could changed the variable so it would automatically update in all my documents. But in InDesign, apparently long variables won’t break over lines, so this won’t work for me. Recommendations?

(2) Text Insets: For larger blocks of boilerplate text that might change and need updating to numerous documents, FrameMaker had text insets -- single files of copy (mine were usually about 1 to 5 paragraphs) that you could place in other documents. Again, when you needed to make a change and apply it globally, this worked great. Is there a InDesign/InCopy CS5 equivalent?

I’ve explored variables, conditional text, and text macros but I don’t think any will serve either of these needs. I hope I'm missing something. HELP. Thanks.
