Uncaught Javascript Exception during create file phase of Merge to HDR Pro.

Provide a descriptive title that includes your OS information:

I am trying to create an HDR file from several large merged panoramas, and everything seems to go very well whichever options I select until the point comes when photoshop tries to create the final file. The individual layers of the HDR are 40188x6848 and saved as PSB files, when loaded they fill the entire 8Gb of memory in my machine.

I am using Windows Vista 64, my graphics card is unsupported and so turned off, I have photoshop setup to use 3 scratch disks, and it appears to be using around 40Gb on the first one and none on others.

 

Provide concise, step-by-step details on how to reproduce the issue you are seeing.

  1. Select File > Automate > Merge to HDR Pro
  2. Select the 5 HDR layer files, check attempt to automatically align layers
  3. Make a cup of tea, you're in for a wait.
  4. Set the EV levels of the files
  5. Select any options you want from the next panel, I've tried most of them by now.
  6. Sit back and wait for the following screen:

Photoshop should have brought up a file containing the merged images, which I could then save to disk.

    Hello, welcome to the beta forum. Sorry to hear you run into problems, but it is the goal of the beta to catch them.

    I want to commend you for your excellent report! One small detail: how many files are you combining for the HDR? Does it crash if you use less of them? (I.E. is there a file size/number that triggers the issue?)

    There are 5 layers, It seems to read all the files fine, aligning them and creating a good HDR preview. I've not tried removing some of the layers, because each attempt takes 2-3 hours before failure.

    Decreasing the size of the input files does seem to resolve the problem though, I resized them all to 10% of their original dimensions and it created the merged HDR file just fine.

    Do you think you could try before going to bed, or something like that? Finding the treshold might be useful for the team to reproduce the issue.

    Reducing the number of layers doesn't help, I think it's all to do with the size of the HDR file that needs to be allocated. The team have sent me a list of things to try, I'll also reduce the size of the layers incrementally at some point, as the answer to that is also of interest to me.

    I've had a bit of time to play with the filesize over the weekend, the results are as below:

     

    1. Resized all images to 40k pixels on the longest edge, tried merge with all open.
      • Resulted in an entirely new error message
    2. Closed all the images, tried again @ 40k
      • Standard error message
      • More scratch space used than before
        • 45.2Gb on Disk 1
        • 1.62Gb on Disk 2
    3. Attempt @35k pixels.
      • All Scratch files still present
      • Same result, size of .tmp file in substantially smaller at 2.31Gb
    4. Closed photoshop, deleted all .tmp files
    5. Attempt @ 30k pixels
      • Space left on first scratch disk at all times
      • Creates file, converts it to 8bit
        • File completely black... not as shown in HDR Preview
    6. Attempt @ 25k pixels
      • Works exactly as anticipated

     

    At each size, and each iteration of the process the exposure on the preview results was significantly different, as was the effect of the “Remove Ghosts” checkbox, which on some occasions lightened the preview image by approx. 1ev, while on others did nothing to the overall exposure.

    Hi Martin,

    Per my private message, the "uncaught JavaScript" exception is something we've seen and have yet to determine a cause or solution.

    Would you please try the following.

    • Do you have following Preferences > Interface settings ON? If they're OFF, does it work if you turn them on?

       - Open Documents as Tabs

       - Enable Floating Document Window Docking

    • Does Merge to HDR work for you at all with smaller files (such as those in the sample set inside the application folder for CS5)?

    • Do other scripts work for you, specifically...

       - File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack... ?

       - File > Automate > Photomerge...?

    • Have you tried restarting with deleted preferences? http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e 41001031ab64-74aaa.html

     

    The HDR screen image preview going black is a known issue related to low-system memory conditions that we have been working on a solution for.

    In the meantime, the workaround would be to lower Photoshop's memory usage from your current (72%) down to as low as (50%).

    What was the "entirely new error message"? And is the  Uncaught Exception  the "standard" message?

    Meredith,

    Apologies, I replied to you privately too, with details of the steps I had taken per your instructions.

    The other error message was:

    New Error.jpg

     

    Lastly it wasn't the image preview that was black, it was the actual image. I had plenty of system memory at the time as the image was substantially smaller than the diagnosis at the start of this thread, and the HDR image was the only one open.
