Cannot open Nikon D4 NEF files in Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.6 … any suggestions?
Use ACR6.7 available here, not idiotic at all!!![]()
Geoff, I did install 6.7 RC , blew the Camera Raw directory
under appdata and still face the same problem
Was chatting live with Adobe tech support for about 44 minutes
this morning and the only thing they finally were able
to recommend was to re-install CS5.1. I yet
to try that out, will let you know if I was being
idiotic after all.

ACR 6.7 is now available as a full release - has been for several weeks - so I'd install that rather than the release candidate. It should automatically install via PS, but if not, use the check for updates menu option to kick start it. Your ACR will then be able to read D4 files (I assume that's what you have, although you don't say in your post above).

I am now officially perplexed. Tried all of the following
a) Cleaned up appdata/Adobe/Camera RAW => tried opening the RAW file, (each time a different one so I don't use the same XMP)
b) Removed the Photoshop preferences file => ""
c) Removed Registry entry for Camera RAW => ""
d) Uninstalled CS5.5 and re-installed (as suggested by Adobe Customer service folks) => ""
DIDNT WORK. YES, I USED UPDATE FEATURE IN PHOTOSHOP TO GET LATEST CAMERA RAW, NOT RC
e) Installed CS6, went straight for updates and it did install Camera RAW 7.1.
Tried to open the file, same old message.
And, I also downloaded Lightroom 4.1. Couldn't import the files. Went straight for the update, nope, it said I don't need any.
It's now been 48 hours into this problem and never been more frustrated.
Hmmm. Well there may be an issue with your machine, or perhaps even with the raw files themselves.
What error message are you getting? You've not actually clarified (you say "same old message"...). What camera are you using (again, you've not clarified, but I would have to assume D4; still be useful for you to clarify though)? What system - Windows, Mac - and spec? With a bit more detail and clarity someone may be able to help you out here.

I am using a Windows 7 machine. Core i7, About a dozen gigs of RAM...if it matters.
With the latest CS6/ RAW 7.1, I get the message "Photoshop cannot open this file"..
"If you are attempting to open a raw file from a digital camera, make sure you have the latest Camera Raw updated....
I did shoot with a Nikon D4.
Aaargh. Honestly, I'm not sure. The rental folks
gave me the camera without a manual, and given
two six hour shoots over the weekend, I confess
I didn't check that. Just went on using the camera
as if it were a D3. Except pushing the ISO to
to 128000 and beyond.
Is there a reason you ask that question, and if I can
confirm from my EXIF, what are my alternatives
P.S: I confirmed with a downloaded trial copy
of CaptureNX2 that I am actually able to
open these files now. I don't really like to deal
with this extra step of converting to TIF via
CaptureNX2 and then processing in Photoshop
Another discovery. CaptureNX2 opens up my
.NEF format files as if they are JPG ! So even CaptureNX2
cannot read the embedded RAW. Spoke with
Nikon guys and they claim Nikon Transfer only writes
bit by bit and doesn't do any file manipulation
Now I doubt the claim :-((
