It is a common error and as you see it even went by experience users at first because the feature though useful at times is not used that much and the keyboard shortcut is easy to accidentally invoke.
And I aghree until it happens to you it is something you would probably not know.
Glad that that was the problem.
BTW if you ever need to hide the edges on purpose keep in mind that the text or objects do actually get selected only you can't see it.
