Problem re-installing CS3

It all started with an Adobe Acrobat update that wouldn't install.  At every startup, I'd have that little icon in the system tray telling me I had an update to install.  But every attempt to do the installation produced an error message.

 

So I decided to try reinstalling CS3.

 

First I deactivated the license without any trouble.

 

I uninstalled CS3.

 

I tried reinstalling it but after clicking "Install CS3 Design Premium", I got

The progress meter fills up, the window goes away, and nothing happens after that.

 

So, I ran the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool...

... and this is as far as it got.  It just stopped doing anything at this point.

 

I looked at "Add Or Remove Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium 1.0.log" and found:

 

Error 1311.Source file not found: C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Desktop\Adobe CS3 Design Premium (E)\Adobe CS3\WinBootstrapper1.cab.  Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

This appears about 15% of the way down the log file.  There's a lot of stuff after it that doesn't have errors.
Anyway, do you have any ideas?

    Looks like you are running out of temporary disk space... Read this article for some guidance.

    Thanks for the reply.  I don't think that's the problem.  I have 262 GB of free space left.  I ran ccleaner and still have the same problem.

    Thanks, but that didn't help. 

     

    I tried installing again and looked at the log.  There was no "Return value 3, ERROR or FATAL" in the log from today.

     

    I think the whole problem with Acrobat updates not installing might have happened after I used CCleaner, a cleanup tool, that affected my registry.

    Can you share the latest log file if the poblem is yet not fixed for you.

    The log file exceeded the 500 kb limit so here is the last tenth or so of the file.  Let me know if you need more of it.

    first , you are running the installation from C:\Application Setups\Adobe CS3 Design Premium\Adobe CS3\  hence copy the installer to the desktop,

     

    delete the installer log , try and install again , a fresh new installer log will be craeted please provide that installer log as in this the data is from the 2011,

    The only irregularities I can see are "Property cannot be retrieved" in a few places.

    1) uninstall CS3 from the control panel

    2) Remove the caps.db file

     

    Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\caps\caps.db

     

    Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\backup\caps.db

     

    3) create the new admin user account and then run the installation

    No luck yet.

     

    I looked in the contol panel list but CS3 was not listed as installed.

    Then I deleted the two copies of caps.db

    Then I created Windows Admin user "CSAdmin"

    Then I logged in as CSAdmin

    Then I put the installation folder on the desktop and ran Adobe CS3/Setup.exe as before

    It behaved as it did before.

    Screen resolution not met? Memory requirements not met? I can't remember the exact minimum requirements for CS3, but having just a 600 pixel high screen seems odd even back then. And 2 GB of system memory really isn't much. Perhaps that's what went wrong in teh first place: You may have changed the screen resolution and then the update refused to install because of it...?

    Can you check , does the Msi installer service is running or not,

     

    Go to start menu-->run, type services.msc and press enter

     

    in the list, locate the "Windows Installer" , right click on it and go to "properties", click on start, click on stop, change the startup type "Automatic" and then turn it on again,

    and check does cs3 gets install.

    CS3 had worked fine on this netbook for a few years.  So, the screen resolution and memory shouldn't be a problem, or at least were not a problem in the past.  I haven't ever changed the screen resolution, but I have occasionally connected to a bigger monitor with a higher resolution.  I don't know whether a higher resolution monitor was connected when I originally installed CS3 successfully.  I just now tried running it connected to a higher resolution monitor but no luck.

    The Windows Installer service was set to Manual.  As user "Dan", I started it, stopped it and set it to automatic.  Then I ran startup.exe again but got the same results.

    Manish from Adobe helped me solve this problem.  We needed to remove the Adobe installer applications listed in the Control Panel Add/Remove list.  But it wouldn't let us do that until we first ran the Windows cleanup tool.  I had used this tool before to remove CS3, but didn't bother to look for anything else.  Today we used the tool to remove three copies of Adobe Installer and one item at the top of the list with no name.

     

    After that, all went well.  Thanks, Manish!

     

    Also, I learned that the Adobe installer spends a lot of time searching through the entire hard drive for previous installations.  So the more files on your computer, the longer this installer will take.
