Lightroom 4 video black thumbnails and playback

On loading I see thumbnails for avi videos for about a second and then they go black. On playing in Lightroom the screen is black but the sound is fine. The videos play correctly in Quicktime and other programs.

 

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

 

LR4 Windows 7, Core i7, ATI Mobile Radeon HD5850, 8Gb RAM

    My first suggestion would be to check for updates to your video drivers.

    They play fine in all other programs and the driver is up to date. It only affects LR 4. I have just installed 4.1 - no difference.

    4.1 shows avi files as black thumbnails and plays only sound. Installing a full codec pack did not solve this. Changing the codec to a different one or converting to another video format solves this. These files are from both Canon and Fuji cameras and play fine outside of Lightroom.

    I have a similar problem but I do not knwo how to find or install a full codec pack. Any guidance woudl be greatly appreciated.

    I used a video conversion program to convert to a different codec. It probably does not need a full codec pack installed, just the coded changed. Google 'codec changer software'. I have not tried any of the free ones so make sure that you make a copy of any file before converting it if the program overwrites the original file.

    Thank you for your reply.

    I am concerned before i start converting outright why it does not play. Many of these vids were created in Adobe Premiere Elements 4, 8 & 10 so they should work seamlessly. The others were done with various canon & sony cameras.

     

    I would prefer to try to install the codex pack BUT I am not sure what it is and where to get it.
