We are running, Mac Pros with OS10.6.8 and CS5.5 . In the past with CS5 if you tried to open an InDesign document that was already open, it would take you to the open document. Since we upgraded to 5.5, if someone tries to open a document already open, it opens a second window of the same document (happens when preference is set to open in tabs also). This is causing problems with saving changes in one version and not the other. Sometimes when the second copy of the document is closed (changes were not made in this copy) it gets copied over the one with the changes. Is there a setting somewhere to stop this?
"Both"? Are you talking about the title bar of the windows? I'm talking about the folder where the document is. When you launch the document, does it create a lock file with a similar name as your original, ending with .idlk?
Hmm, I wonder what would cause that, but I'd guess that that's the problem. The .idlk file keeps a second copy from being opened. You might try trashing your preferences, see if that clears it up.
Thank you for correcting my emails. As you can probably tell, I'm new to using forums.
The files are saved locally on each computer. It gets even more strange. The files that lose the .idlk file are on the desktop. If the file is in a folder, the idlk file remains when the .indd file is opened.
We do have a file server. The individual pulls the file to their desktop. Some of the files we have been checking with this problem are not files that get saved to the server (they remain on the originator's desktop).
I'm now discovering that if the .indd file is a native 5.5 file, the .idlk works whether in a folder or on the desktop. If the file was orginally made in CS5, that is when we are having a problem. If it is a CS5 file and we just open it the ,idlk file disappears. If the file is opened and Saved As with the same name and replace the old file, the .idlk file remains.
That makes sense. Until the file is actually saved it doesn’t truly exist as a 5.5 file.
You’ll see the word Re: Can open multiple copies of single document at same time; is there a way to stop this? in the title bar.
Save the file in 5.5 and you shouldn’t have any problems.
